Perry Farrell to Release 35-Year Retrospective Box Set
Box set and Blu-Ray will span of Farrell’s career, including early recording “Ho Ka Hey”

By Claire Shaffer

Perry Farrell — the frontman for Jane’s Addiction, Porno for Pyros and Satellite Party — has announced Perry Farrell: The Glitz; The Glamour, a nine-vinyl box set that will take a retrospective look at Farrell’s prolific 35-year-long career.

The box set’s 68 tracks cover rarities and early recordings of Farrell’s, including “Ho Ka Hey,” a song from his first band Psi Com that was originally released in 1985 as part of a five-track EP. Taking inspiration from Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees, Farrell recorded the post-punk tune just prior to the formation of Jane’s Addiction; it showcases Farrell’s early involvement in the alternative rock scene.

In addition to the vinyl recordings, the box set will include a Blu-ray featuring 12 uncompressed Dolby Atmos mixes from Kind Heaven and three brand-new previously unreleased Atmos mixes, a photographic memoirs hardcover book, a bandana and two exclusive Zoltar prints. The box set will also be available as a limited streamable download, with preorders beginning August 7th.

Other highlights include an unearthed recording of the Doors’ Jim Morrison, written and recorded with Starcrawler, and 11 commissioned remixes from and collaborations with Maceo Plex, Groove Armada, UNKLE, Solomun, Booka Shade, Richard Norris, Francois K and the Avalanches.

This is available to pre-order now at Perry Farrell.com It’s limited to 3,000 numbered copies and will set you back $299.99. They have the complete contents and tracklisting listed there.

I already have a lot of what is included but there are still several things I’d love to have. I definitely want it for the book if nothing else.

Here’s some details from Perry’s site:

Perry Farrell: The Glitz; The Glamour is a 35-year retrospective of his life, music and art that looks into his world outside the works of Jane’s Addiction and Porno For Pyros --to focus on 68 tracks worth of Perry’ s alt rock rarities and heart-pounding artistic explorations. The retrospective is served up in the form of a vinyl and collectible boxset and will be an art piece in its own right -- in collaboration with fine artist, Zoltar This offering firmly puts his stake in the ground as the “Godfather of Alternative Rock.”

From the goth of Psi Com , the beautiful experiments of Song Yet to Be Sung, and Satellite Party and the current reinterpretations of Perry's body of work from the greatest minds in dance and electronic, there is something for all fans of Perry's unique musical stylings.

The Boxset will be strictly limited to just 3,000 units exclusively numbered.

Man, $300 is fucking steep. I appreciate the quality vinyl setup, but for what is in this set... no rare JA, no rare P4P, no rare Psi Com... there is just nothing aside from the rarity of the set itself to prompt the pricing. Maybe I’m just old and stingy now, but I’m not feeling the urge to drop $300 to just have something with some rare remixes and a dolby atmos mixes of some new music. I *want* to want it, and I sat there for a few minutes with the shit in my cart, but I just couldn’t get myself to pull the trigger.

I feel ya. Seems like this would have been a perfect time for the "Worktape 1" Psi Com songs to see mainstream release, especially with the marketing focus on Psi Com ("Ho Ka Hey" released as a digital single for some reason). Those would have made excellent bonus tracks on a Psi Com reissue! Frustrating.

Looks like they’ve reduced the number of these that they are going to make from 3000 to 1500. If you’re wanting to get a copy I’d order soon or else you may get shut out.

Preorder perk: in addition to "Pets" download, preorders for the box were emailed link to "Kimberly Austin" audio/video from the Lolla '20 set & "City of 9 Gates" single--the latter being nothing particularly new.

More disappointing is the video of Kimberly Austin is of poorer quality than what you could (with a little know-how) have downloaded from YouTube.

Any updates? This release was supposed to drop last Friday and they're still taking pre-orders.

While the vinyl run was cut in half a while back (1500), there's also a CD version up now with the book and stuff @ $100 US.
