A Party Like No Other

Jason Hood - Time Out Music Columnist

Fri 09/14/2007 07:01AM MST

Growing up in Los Angeles in the 1980s was, for want of a better word, interesting. I don't ever remember being bored (maybe once or twice in Mr. Lee's geography class, but I wasn't there enough to let a lack of stimulation get me down).

In L.A. I could surf every day of the year and skateboard until my legs fell off. I could splash in the Pacific, stop by Disneyland and hit the slopes for a few runs all in the same day. The smog didn't deflate my sense of optimism nor did the traffic, natural disasters or riots. Do you know why? Because I had pride in my city and I felt a connection to the land, sea and culture.

Part of that culture was the vibrant and eclectic music scene. L.A. was a hotbed of rock and alternative music and at the forefront of those movements was Jane's Addiction. I'm not afraid to tell you that Jane's Addiction and their lead singer Perry Farrell changed my life. Upon first listen, my taste in music changed, my sense of fashion changed and my outlook on life changed for the better -— all this because of one man and his band of renegades. That man, Perry Farrell, and his new project, Satellite Party, will grace Aspen's Belly Up on Wednesday, Sept. 19, and I would ask you to please come experience one of the true legends of modern music.

Satellite Party is many things at once: an artist collective and a progressive movement defined by its effort to change the world one step at a time. They are a fusion of genres, a cabaret dedicated to imagination and a return to the positive kind of activism that has rarely been seen since the ‘60s. But most of all, they make beautiful, transcendent and purely human music.

Their debut release, "Ultra Payloaded," invokes the spirit of Farrell's previous projects from Psi Com, Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyro's to his solo efforts as Perry Farrell and D.J. Peretz. The album is a fantastic voyage across the outer realms of funky psychedelia, the breezy grasslands of gorgeous ballads and finally the colossal mountains of rock ‘n' roll. That's a lot of territory to cover in the space of one album, but Farrell and the rest of Satellite Party somehow pull it off.

The list of artists that contributed to "Ultra Payloaded" is remarkable and, to music junkies like myself, delicious. Besides an astounding 30-piece orchestra, the guests include fellow L.A. superstars Flea and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, Porno for Pyro's guitar ace Peter DiStefano and the formidable goth icon himself, Peter Hook. Film composer Harry Gregson-Williams ("Chronicles of Narnia," "Kingdom of Heaven") even adds his expertise.

On "Ultra Payloaded" there are songs novel and songs sublime, there are slices of truth and bits of what we wish the truth could be. The track "Milky Ave" is a gentle, peaceful and heartfelt dream of a love-filled paradisaic utopia. At one point Farrell sings, "all the things we dream that never get to happen, do here." That lyric in itself is pure Perry Farrell. He is the optimist in an army facing adversity, and you have to give it to him; he dreams big.

"Kinky" is a guitar-driven, rhythm-heavy affair that has Farrell feeling horny. This should not come as a surprise if you are at all familiar with his past body of work. Farrell is a sexual person and he doesn't have any qualms about sharing that fact through song.

One of the shining moments on "Ultra Payloaded" is "Woman in the Window." The song features an unreleased vocal track from Jim Morrison of The Doors. Morrison sings plaintively over layers of Farrell's music and the result is both eerie and dazzling.

It could be argued that "Ultra Payloaded" is Farrell's finest work to date, but there is little doubt that Satellite Party is by far his most ambitious project thus far.

Farrell's career has been insanely successful. From the groundbreaking work of Jane's Addiction to his landmark idea of Lollapalooza, he has again and again proven that outer space is the limit when it comes to imagination. While Farrell's music has always been clever, innovative, tender and raucous, his ability to perform live is unparalleled. He is a commanding presence on stage, his voice never wavers and he is full of surprises. To see Satellite Party in a venue the size of Belly Up will be an unforgettable experience.

Perry Farrell throwin' a party

By Aspen Times Staff
Aspen, CO Colorado
September 19, 2007

ASPEN — Perry Farrell’s moment as the godfather of alternative rock is a few years behind him. But it’s clear Farrell hasn’t run out of ideas, either within or beyond the musical realm.

Earlier this year, the singer launched a new project, Satellite Party. The band’s stated goal is to ignite a movement to solve the world’s problems, from poverty to global warming to the shortage of musicians and worthy music. There are at least two prongs to Farrell’s attack: He has conceived the notion of “The Solutionists,” a group of activists and artists focused on global improvements. (”The Solutionists” is also the title of a song on Satellite Party's debut CD, “Ultra Payloaded.”) And the band’s concerts are designed to remind people of the potential of the world and their place in enhancing it.

There are, however, hints of disunity within the group; already, two members have parted ways. But Satellite Party, which made its live debut in Aspen during the X Games, lands here again, with a show on Wednesday at Belly Up Aspen. Rock band Mink, which released its self-titled, debut CD two weeks ago, opens.

Tickets are $35; the show starts at 10 p.m. at Belly Up Aspen, 450 S. Galena St. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Farrell singing out

By Stewart Oksenhorn
Aspen, CO Colorado
September 20, 2007

ASPEN — Part of the plan behind Satellite Party, the latest band headed by former Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell, was to take music out of dark clubs and into the light.

“Music has been experienced over the last 40, 50 years indoors,” Farrell told in an interview with The Aspen Times in January. “You come back outside and you feel like the world belongs to someone else, like you’re the subject of Big Brother. You can reclaim the Earth by partying on it. We’re not going into a hole; we’re going out into the mountains.”

Satellite Party then went and proved the point by making its first appearance as a touring band in Wagner Park, under Aspen Mountain, during last winter’s X Games.

The band’s return visit to Aspen on Wednesday was scheduled for one of those subterranean spots Farrell said he was trying to escape: Belly Up. But Satellite Party was not about to be denied its right to party in full view of nature’s splendor. Playing acoustic instruments and with the barest amount of amplification, Farrell and his mates — including his wife, singer Etty Lau Farrell — performed a free public show on the outdoor patio outside of Café Ink. Publicized only by an e-mail Wednesday afternoon, and the ensuing word-of-mouth, some 200 fans showed up for the 5:30 concert.

The sound was creaky — a cord to amplify the guitar showed up in the middle of the second tune — and the set a brief three songs. But listeners treated Farrell with respect and adoration, and Farrell returned the favor by giving a commited performance and reminding his audience of the surrounding beauty that surrounded.
It was an odd, unexpected and wonderful way to spend an offseason evening.

“One specific idea is to bring to the mind, to the consciousness, the sheer beauty and majest of the world,” Farrell told The Aspen Times in that January interview. “Ultra Payloaded,” the band’s debut CD, released in May, is loaded with themes of improving the world, mostly through love and respect for the environment. The band’s opening song at the impromptu show was “Hard Life Easy,” a tune from “Ultra Payloaded” about changes for the better.

The setting for the gig was appropriate in another way. The show took place outside D&E Ski & Snowboard Shop. Farrell, a snowboarder, has descended the mountains he sang beneath Wednesday.

No sub Perry didn't do that one.
Somebody that goes by the name Scrojo did it.
He also made one for the Satellite Party show at the same venue back in January.
Here's a link for his website: http://www.scrojo.com/
When I first saw the poster last night I didn't notice "Satellite" was spelled wrong.
Here's the same poster with the spelling corrected.
Image
Here's the poster he did for the January 28th show.

He sells his posters on his site if you or anyone else is interested.
