JANE'S ADDICTION
The Palace, February 24

JANE'S Addiction's first Melbourne show before today's Soundwave festival was a something of a '90s flashback - just with more wrinkles and less moshing. Both on stage and off.

But with their original line-up, the LA band proved age hasn't wearied them or stopped them playing serious rawk as they tore through a hit-laden set.

Opening with Up the Beach from their 1988 debut Nothing's Shocking, the band proved from the outset that they have still got it. In buckets. From Perry's distinctive vocals, to guitarist Dave Navarro's blistering guitar (and glistening pecs, on show from the first song) to the brilliant light show and sexy back-up dancers.

Material from their debut and their hit album Ritual de lo Habitual made up most of the show - each track greeted with wild enthusiasm by the crowd - with some jamming thrown in, Navarro proving his math-rock skills (not that anyone would dare call them into question) on some of the more metal-influenced lead breaks.

Perry has lost none of his flamboyant style, prancing the stage maniacally in a part-Freddie Mercury, part-Prince ensemble, laden with jewellery and cavorting sexily with his dancers.

It was a short gig but every track was as polished as hell - Been Caught Stealing, Three Days, Then She Did - and the crowd loved every minute, alternating between the occasional devil's horn signs to singalong choruses. Just what one wants out of a rock'n'roll show. Brilliant.
