Jane's Addiction @ The Palace, Melbourne
(24/02/10)

Gig Reviews by hoipolloi906, 25th February, 2010

The subtly reunited Jane’s Addiction returned to the Palace (formerly the Metro) to a capacity crowd of die-hard fans. Last time the original Jane’s Addiction line-up was in Melbourne they played the Metro (now the Palace) over two nights in September 1991, the 17th and the 18th to be precise.

Jane’s Addiction are the personification of ego and it’s easy to see why, given the response they received. They performed within what can only be visually recognised as a twisted psuedo-circus equipped with bare-chested backing dancers and the largest, most blinding lights. Perry Farrell was in a perpetual state of demand, his expensive taste in wine comforted his inner ego as his women – of the burlesque kind – physically stroked the outer when the cry of the crowd was simply not enough. The band were here for themselves and play entirely for themselves and somehow in between this individual demand they find a common unity which is still as exciting and refreshingly absorbed by the crowd all these years later.

Up The Beach initiated the proceedings in a casually restrained way as a teaser of what was to come. Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins, and Eric Avery don’t struggle with ability and powered through a set of songs primarily from Nothing’s Shocking with the intention of reaffirming the reputation they have for being a great live band, though something about them suggests they’d rather be known as the best. Ocean Size, The Mountain Song, Had A Dad, Standing In The Shower Thinking, and the highlight Ted… Just Admit It served as the perfect representation of how good this band can be and just how good those songs still are.

Ted… Just Admit It was almost a gig in itself, the song contains all the restrain and arrogance of an entire set and arguably stands as the highlight of this band’s song writing career. Neglecting any sign of their most recent album Strays – which didn’t feature Avery – the short set included more from Nothing’s Shocking and a few casual reminders that they made the album Ritual de lo Habitual. Whores and Stop! were introduced closer to the end after Perry Farrell enlightened us on the familiar “humour of the Australian spirit”. Stating how great it was that our media officials embraced a nineteenth position finish in the bobsleigh with the same passion and interest of a first place win.

When it seemed like they could have been playing the same set from 1991 a revised version of Jane Says reminded the crowd they’ve progressed some 19 years on, if only slightly. This and the rhythmically heavy Chip Away closed the set with the same casual restrain and arrogance naturally employed to introduce the set just over an hour earlier.

This was more than a reminder of an era of Jane’s Addiction. Unofficially, this was to be another “last gig” for bass player Eric Avery who will spend just the remainder of the Soundwave tour with the band. It’s part of the constant states of change they go through in an endeavour to keep their sound exciting and refreshed. It’s a return to the past before they move forward and closer to anything, which usually happens in and amongst the chaos of Jane’s Addiction. Whether or not this will include another nostalgic reformation tour in another 19 years time is not yet known and assumed to be not out of the question. Perhaps they might even have another album by that time too.

Whilst the band may age, their music doesn’t. Longevity is the feat most bands can only hope to attain; time is kind to Jane’s Addiction as it’s in their nature to transcend. Whatever they do next could be a disaster, but who cares? Even if it is, they’d have to work ferociously hard for the legacy of their original era and this gig to be forgotten.
