Soundwave Adelaide 2010 - Faith No More, Placebo, Jane's Addiction converts the sceptics

Michael Owen-Brown From: AdelaideNow February 28, 2010 10:48AM

THEY may be approaching a Midlife Crisis, but Faith No More's return to Adelaide was ample Evidence that these guys put on an Epic show.
It had been a long time since Faith No More had visited Adelaide - they were regular visitors to our shores in the 1990s but broke up in 1998.

But any perception that their return at Saturday's Soundwave festival in Bonython Park might be a cash-in reunion by musicians whose heart wasn't really in it anymore was quickly dispelled.

These guys are supreme musicians - in particular Mike Patton, one of the most talented vocalists in rock.

From lounge-style crooning to death-metal roars and nightmarish howling, Patton is able to contort his voice into extraordinarily unnatural registers.

While the classics like Midlife Crisis and Epic got an airing, the really impressive songs were those that allowed Patton to show off his vocal range - in particular the early classic Chinese Arithmetic, Stripsearch and a relentlessly brutal Gentle Art of Making Enemies.

FNM were the deserved headliners to an excellent festival - one that was well-organised, fun and safe. Ten bucks for a scotch and coke seemed a little excessive, but the festival atmosphere was fantastic - perhaps helped by the fact that everyone there had a shared passion for heavy guitar-based music.

Earlier, Jane's Addiction added some heavy rock burlesque psychedelia to the day with a superb main stage set that was perfectly in tune with the sun-drenched late afternoon.

Three Days and Mountain Song were the ideal showcases for guitarist Dave Navarro's amazingly dextrous licks, Eric Avery's bone-shuddering bass and Perry Farrell's spaced-out vocals.

AFI, Paramore and Jimmy Eat World pumped out slick and enjoyable punk and emo tunes, but found it hard to top Placebo's power and passion.

The London rockers proved that energy, heartfelt lyrics and shiny silver pants are a killer combination - and their many hardcore fans roared back every word from classics like Meds, the Bitter End and Special K.

Canadian metal veterans Anvil kept the headbangers pumped with an impressive set of classic `80s metal tunes with a dash of Spinal Tap (seriously, an intro to a song hailing the destructive power of Mothra?)

Fellow Canadians The Weakerthans mined different emotional territory with their gentle, folk-influenced melodic rock, while Anti-Flag kept fighting the power with an impassioned performance of fast, loud punk.
