Moby, Jane’s Addiction lead Pic.Nic 2011 Festival lineup
By DAVID BRINN

Int'l musicians will perform at year’s Pic.nic 2011 music festival taking place throughout the summer at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds outdoor venue.

1990s alternative rockers Jane’s Addiction and techno electronic techo whiz Moby are among the international luminaries that have been booked to perform at this year’s Pic.nic 2011 music festival taking place throughout the summer at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds outdoor venue.

The 45-year-old Moby has been a huge presence in the dance music scene since his second single “Go” brought him worldwide fame in 1991. A true musical eclectic, his 1999 album Play sold more than 10 million copies and a slew of his songs have appeared in film soundtracks and TV commercials. After lying low for a while, Moby’s on the comeback trail with a new album Destroyed and tour that will bring him to Israel on July 12, along with famed DJs Kruder & Dorfmeister.

Jane’s Addiction, one of the most revered alt rock bands of the ‘80s and ‘90s are also creating new music with almost their original lineup. Singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, with the help on bass of Dave Sitek from the Brooklyn art-rockers TV On the Radio, are releasing The Great Escape Artist this summer and launching a world tour including many festival slots. They’ll arrive in Tel Aviv for their Pic.nic appearance on September 1. Promoter Shuki Weiss promised a myriad of acts for each of the Pic.nic shows and more international names to be announced.

Concert Review: Jane's Addiction
By DANIEL K. EISENBUD
09/04/2011 21:40

Perry Farrel (Peretz Bernstein), Stephen "Shlomo" Perkins and Dave Navarro performed in front of 5,000 at the TA Exhibition Center.

If anticipation was a drug, 5,000 Jane’s Addiction fans were as high as Sputnik at the Tel Aviv Exhibition Center Thursday night, prior to the alternative rock gods’ show – which many thought might not happen. Indeed, in the wake of mass concern following the super group’s last-minute cancellation of a gig in Leeds, England just days prior due to singer Perry Farrell’s throat ailment, the much-hyped reunion show appeared to be in jeopardy.

However, the legendary front man did not disappoint.

Looking at least 15 years younger than his 51 years of age, and every bit the part of the helmsman of one of the most respected and celebrated rock groups of the past quarter century, Farrell (born Peretz Bernstein) along with wingman and guitar virtuoso, Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins, did what Jane’s Addiction does: Rock.

Launching the show with a booming cover of “Whores,” the group took the thousands of young and Gen X fans huddled together into the stratosphere with them during a 12-song set list that included perennial favorites “Just Because,” “Been Caught Stealing,” and “Mountain Song.”

With the sole complaint that all the grandmothers in Israel were trying to feed him – and noting that Perkins, whose Jewish name is Shlomo, got his first drum set after his bar mitzva roughly 30 years ago – Farrell, a proud Jew, expressed his appreciation of performing in Israel, and the crowd roared its approval.

Going out with a bang – launched by an enormous confetti cannon – the group performed an encore of the classic “Jane Say’s,” leaving the crowd as only true masters of rock do: wanting more.
