Jane's Addiction retains edge

By: Hays Davis | For Richmond.com
Published: March 08, 2012

By the time Jane's Addiction was undergoing the initial final tour of the original four members in 1991, it had become alternative rock's equivalent of Led Zeppelin. The keening wail of singer Perry Farrell put an unmistakable stamp on their songs' vivid depictions of life on the fringes, but the fiercely talented musical force of guitarist Dave Navarro, original bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins established early on that the band's power was borne of the sum of its parts.

Forming in 1985 with the demise of Farrell's band Psi Com, Jane's Addiction created a major buzz in Los Angeles that attracted considerable label interest. A local club show was recorded and released as their self-titled debut on the indie Triple X Records, and the band signed to Warner Brothers for its first studio album.

Sales for 1988's "Nothing's Shocking" didn't meet expectations, thanks in part to nonexistent video airplay for the single "Mountain Song" because of its display of nudity, but the quartet nevertheless began to establish a following beyond their hometown.

Further touring, the release of the 1990 album "Ritual de lo Habitual," and exposure from the singles "Been Caught Stealing" and "Stop!" drove them ahead as a new commercial force. However, the 13-month tour for "Ritual" was the band's undoing, but not before they headlined the first Lollapalooza festival.

Originally a touring concern before eventually settling into an annual Chicago-based festival, the Farrell-created Lollapalooza was an alt-rock showcase, and in 1991 Jane's Addiction presided over a lineup that included Nine Inch Nails, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Ice-T.

Following their split that year, members turned to new pursuits over the next few years. Farrell and Perkins stayed on the radar as Porno For Pyros while Avery and Navarro released a 1994 album as Deconstruction. Navarro served a brief stint in Red Hot Chili Peppers, and that band's bassist Flea joined an Avery-less Jane's Addiction for some shows in 1997. After further personnel shifts, Jane's released 2003's "Strays" album with current bassist Chris Chaney and entered a new period of increased activity.

The HBO show "Entourage" premiered in 2004 with the "Strays" track "Superhero" as its opening theme.

The members of Jane's Addiction have been forthcoming over the years about the volatility of their personalities, but with the space provided by numerous outside projects over the past decade, the band has reunited occasionally to tour. Last year saw the release of a new album, "The Great Escape Artist," and Farrell has expressed his enthusiasm for looking toward new possibilities with Jane's Addiction.

In the meantime, longtime fans are always glad to have at least one more opportunity to catch the epic grandeur of "Three Days" or the explosive "Mountain Song" live.
