CHILLICOTHE —

Perry Farrell, the artist who helped shape the modern-day music festival as we know it, will perform at Summer Camp Music Festival 2012.
Farrell will bring his band Jane’s Addiction to the annual event, set for May 25 to 27 at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe. The lineup includes more than 100 bands on seven stages.

Farrell is known as one of the godfathers of alternative rock music and is the creator of the long-running music festival Lollapalooza, which first toured nationally and in recent years made its home in Chicago’s Grant Park.

Promoter Ian Goldberg of Jay Goldberg Events and Entertainment said bringing Jane’s Addiction to central Illinois is the fulfillment of a dream.

“I’ve got to admit, it wasn’t something that I even thought would be possible,” he said. “And one day I opened my inbox and there was an email from the William Morris Agency asking if I’d be interested in Jane’s Addiction playing Summer Camp. And I responded with an expletive-filled email saying how excited I’d be.”

William Morris represents other Summer Camp performers, so the agency was familiar with the festival, Goldberg said. The event fit conveniently into the band's spring tour schedule.

Goldberg, 40, said he discovered Jane’s Addiction during his senior year in high school and attended the Lollapalooza tour in its early days.

“They were a groundbreaking band, they had a sound that was so different from anything that anyone else was doing,” he said. “Remember, this was pre-Nirvana, pre-Pearl Jam, before the alternative movement of the 90s. They were making songs with riffing guitars and a singer that was out of this world. I had never heard anything like it.”

Summer Camp has hosted acts such as Willie Nelson, the Flaming Lips, Huey Lewis and George Clinton since it’s inception in 2001.

Goldberg said there are more announcements to come, including a nationally known hip-hop act, which he couldn’t name just yet, as he is waiting for final paperwork to go through.

Tickets for the three-day music festival are currently selling for $174. The lineup also includes moe., Umphrey’s McGee, Primus, Pretty Lights, Gov’t Mule, Gogol Bordello, G. Love and Special Sauce. To purchase tickets, visit Summercampfestival.com.

Summer Camp music festival kicks off today

If you drive by Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe today, you'll see a massive party beginning to take shape.

Summer Camp Music Festival 2012 started admitting pre-party ticket holders at noon. The park grounds will gradually fill with an expected 15,000 campers and more than 100 bands on six stages - and all the tents, RVs, lawn chairs coolers and sleeping bags needed to transform the space into a home-away-from-home for Memorial Day weekend.

The festival, officially Friday through Sunday, has become known for bringing major and upcoming acts to Chillicothe. Some of the festival highlights this year include:

Jane's Addiction

Jane's Addiction released its first studio album in 1988 and influenced a generation of alternative rockers such as Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Tool. The band's theatrical and eccentric leader Perry Farrell founded Lollapalooza music festival. Plays: 10 p.m. Sunday.

Tedeschi Trucks Band

The 11-piece band, led by husband-and-wife pair Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, formed in 2010, after the couple put their solo projects on hold to work together. Their project is working out; the band's debut album, "Revelator," won a Grammy Award for best blues album. Plays: 6:30 p.m. Sunday. (see our story)

Primus

Band leader Les Claypool, considered one of the most versatile bassists of our time, has played the festival in past years. But this is the first time that he'll bring Primus along. The band started out as an underground cult phenomenon in San Francisco in the mid-1980s then turned its weirdly experimental music into pop stardom. Plays: 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Gov't Mule

Warren Haynes and Allen Woody formed this Southern rock jam band in 1994 as an Allman Brothers Band side project. Plays: 7 p.m. Saturday. (see our story)

Review: Jane's Addiction caps weekend of musical variety

CHILLICOTHE —

The Jane's Addiction concert was the place everybody wanted to be on the last night of Summer Camp Music Festival.

Despite the event's seven stages and more than 100 different acts, thousands of music fans swarmed to Sunshine stage at 10 p.m. Sunday to see the band fronted by alternative-rock pioneer Perry Farrell.

Farrell is no stranger to the festival circuit, having founded Lollapalooza, one of the biggest modern-day music extravaganzas. His presence in Chillicothe was no small thing.

The band played a 90-minute set composed of many classic Jane's Addiction songs. Farrell came out in black jeans and a black vest, neck ringed with chains. His voice reached an eerie howl on "Mountain Song," and he was all over the stage, doing a good job of giving fans in all directions some face time. Guitarist Dave Navarro is less of a showman but brings a laid-back cool to the show: Eyeliner, tattoos, disaffected facial expressions.

Farrell bantered a bit, playfully admonishing the crowd for tossing glow sticks at him, then talking about the hotel he was staying at in Peoria, and how the Ragtime World Championships had taken over for the weekend. Not exactly his crowd.

"We went through and stole all their jewelry while they were away," he said, before tearing into "Been Caught Stealing." The crowd sang along to "Jane Says."

The props were strange. Two scantily clad dancers pranced around and were lifted into the sky in big hoop skirts, the white fabric falling to the floor. They just hung out up there, kicking their hoop skirts around. A man in a black feathery outfit lumbered around, and another man in a white suit with a nylon face cover also lurked about. The guitarists sat on elaborate wooden thrones for one song, and then took part in a tribal drum session at the end.

The show was visually appealing, but the sound wasn't great. At times the music swallowed Farrell's voice. But the spectacle drew masses of campers anyway, and even some of the talent. Chicago jam-rock band Umphrey's McGee was ushered into the photo pit for a front-row view of the show. Michael Franti watched from a spot to the right of the stage, mixed in with the common folk.

The concert capped a day of amazing music. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band took its audience to New Orleans, with spicy jazz and an upbeat rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In." Franti sang his cheerful reggae-inspired tunes, including "The Sound of Sunshine" and "Hey Hey Hey." Tedeschi Trucks Band brought a solid blues set with an 11-piece band and the strong voice of Susan Tedeschi, who sounds a little like Bonnie Raitt. Electronic act Pretty Lights, with an impressive laser light show, closed the festival by drawing a massive sea of fans sporting various glow-in-the-dark flair.

Jane's Addiction put on a rocking show, but it was really just one small part of the day.

Should be noted (and we have it right on the show page), the last song was Chip Away and not Trip Away
