Jane's Addiction treats Landmark Theatre crowd to a big alt-rock spectacle

Mark Bialczak, The Post-Standard By Mark Bialczak, The Post-Standard

From the first notes of opening song “Underground,” it was obvious that Jane’s Addiction came to the Landmark Theatre on Wednesday night ready for a big and good time.

Perry Farrell, short-haired and wearing a grin, immediately sang from his soul, a sound full of enough echo and reverb to remind the half-the-house crowd of about 1,500 just why this band started a movement two decades ago with its alt-rock sonics. Dave Navarro, bare-chested but wearing plenty of ink, fired up quickly on the guitar. Drummer Stephen Perkins sat in the back but delivered an in-your-face beat. The new guy, Chris Chaney, was plenty ready
to lay down the solid bass lines.

The fans stood and cheered. After all, they’d been waiting about an hour since opener Mutemath ended its crazy-good set.
After the smoke machine first spewed and the stage lights began slowly sweeping, a full two Pink Floyd classics boomed through the house before Jane’s Addiction made its quite grand entrance.

Farrell and Navarro both carried the stature of rock ‘n’ roll giants.

Farrell sang with passion, on “Just Because” and “Been Caught Stealing” and “Ain’t No Right” and “Twisted Tales.”

He interacted with the crowd, batting a big, white balloon back toward the fans twice during one song. A bit later, Navarro swatted said balloon with the neck of his guitar without missing a note.

Farrell and Navarro both took to the edge of the stage to look fans square in the eyes, and the lead singer even slapped a palm or three.

Farrell talked, too. He told the crowd how the band had whiled away time in these parts.

“We were on a farm,” he declared. “We milked cows. We milked sheep. We ate some cheese. We drank some beer that was unreal.”

Ah, yes. Excess was a theme, wretched and otherwise. Two women swinging from trapezes to start the night wore gowns that hung several dozen feet down toward the stage. Then they weren’t wearing the bottoms. A guy dressed in white, face covered, walked across the stage carrying a bag over his shoulder. Another guy, up top on a riser, looked for all the world like he was slicing into his face while washing it.

“Thanks for the beer. Thanks for the lamb burgers. It’s nice to be welcome for a change,” he told the crowd. Then he drank from a bottle of wine, also wandering to stage front to pour the red into empty plastic cups thrust upward by fans.

At the midpoint, stagehands rushed in to set the four musicians into an acoustic four-across line at stage front.

The crowd sang along spiritedly as the four performed a passionate “Jane Says.”

For the final song before the encore, Farrell shouted the closing line and the title. “Stop!”

Minutes later the video screens rolled again, treating crowd to a film of women getting naked.

When Mutemath’s lead singer Paul Meany introduced the band as coming from New Orleans, he sounded exactly like a guy from New Orleans. When he introduced the song “Tell Your Heart Heads Up,” it was a great accent for a compelling piece.
Meany and mates treated the early arrivers with a set that was a quite the spectacle.

Drummer Darren King delivered big beats on a small kit. By the end of the night, Meany was beating the drums, along with guitarist Todd Gummeran while King had two of them going while he was standing atop Meany’s keyboard.

Anyone have a full setlist? Looks like they're shuffling in/out a few songs each night.

Great Setlist. Three Days should be played every show IMO. That is the most classic of the classics!
