Re: Rich Costey Named as Jane's Addiction's Next Producer
Rich produced Dave's Trust No One - which I personally think is a great album. I know a lot of people think TNO is over-produced in comparison to the original Spread demos - and I would definitely agree that TNO has a more produced and polished sound. Still, I think he's definitely a better fit than Ezrin was. Looking forward to what they all come up with.

I've been digging around a little after reading this news and this guy is like the busiest guy I never heard of.
I guess we could assume he got the nod at least in part because of his previous work with Dave but he's got quite a resume and has worked with a who's who of current musicians.

Dave Navarro - Rhimorse -Sunny Day has good sound. Bass guitar tone sound like Flea. Acoustical guitar has good timbre. Light organic percussission. All of it lost on the Trust No One. Organic sound replace by synthetic sound and synthetic drum. Why they do this I do not know. It was better first time.

Rich Costey is a fantastic producer. He has done some of my favourite albums
Interpol- Our Love To Admire
Muse- Absolution
Doves - Some Cities.
He is basically known for getting a Huge sound. I didnt know that he did Daves Solo album. That was a little too produced for my liking, but I can see how the record company probably pushed for that more than Dave or Rich. Rich's records sound "produced" but in a tasteful and awesome way. I would suggest you check out Absolution to see what he is capable of. ( pretty sure he has done the last 3 muse albums actually. This is just my fave one)

Funny enough, he work with Eric near the end of Polarbear's run..
http://somediverswhistle.com/ericavery/Late 1999 - Polar Bear takes another hit when Biff's studio is broken into and much of the band's integral equipment is stolen. After taking much of the summer off, the band attempts to get some momentum going again by working on new material and a possible return to the stage. The band is in talks with Slash for a record deal. The label even pays for the band to record a new demo with prominent producer Rich Costey (David Bowie, Philip Glass, Dave Navarro). They record two songs together in September, but the band isn't totally happy with the results. And long story short: the nearly done-deal record contract falls through due to personnel changes at the label. Other potential options still exist, however, so the guys remain optimistic and in the meantime work on a handful of new songs before the holidays.

Yeah I noticed that when I was digging through his bio earlier today.intertwoven wrote:Funny enough, he work with Eric near the end of Polarbear's run..
I need to track down those two PB tracks and give them a more critical listen.
I can't remember for sure but I think I got them off the PB myspace a few years back if anyone is looking for them.

There is definitely a difference between a highly well-produced album and an over-produced album - I think in some ways it requires patience and attention to detail by the producer and artists. Look at bands like Garbage and NIN, both have managed to work the highly produced and stripped down angles and stay true to form. Costey definitely has the credentials. Can't wait to hear what they're working on
