Jane's Addiction bass player Rumor Mill

Post by jimmydeviljames »

Ok guys,

Lets have a home for the rumors - be they solid, ridiculous or xiola style jilted.

Fire away.

Im going to start with Dan Cleary- Dave's Guitar Tech, friends with the band obviously and recent twitter messages suggest he is working outside his usual band. Jane's usually go for people with some kind of profile ( no offense to Dan for not being famous ) so im not sure how logical this might be.

Is that really the case? That works w/ Flea and Duff, but not LeNoble or Chaney - and certainly not the same kind of profile.

Well it does because Martyn was in Porno for Pyros Cheney played in Alanis Morrisetts band..

Those are known bands with "profiles"... people recognise who they are..

Doesnt really work the same if you say they got the guy from Grace and Manners..

He is a cool guy to his DM fans and ppl who know him through his association with Dave. I hope he gets a look in.

People recognize the names of where they came from, but not them as being part of that name. RHCP and GNR are hugely prolific and well-established bands, bands that casual music fans know member names. Aside from Perry, that's simply not the case for P4P, a band less known than Jane's Addiction. Alanis is a solo artist - outside of her more dedicated fans, most people don't know who has supported her. Her supporting band has no public profile.

Basically, it was a "big deal" when Flea and Duff joined Jane's Addiction because they had a public profile and came from hugely successful bands and brought that level of credibility to Jane's. People knew who they were. When Martyn and Chris joined, their previous musical associations was their credibility for being in Jane's Addiction, and it was to note who they were.

It is also worth noting that the two guys with the largest profiles were in the band for the shortest amount of time, and both had other big projects to go back to.

Obviously the common denominator across the board is talent. Dan Cleary has talent, and he is an awesome guy, but I don't think it is him - not for not having any sort of public profile, but simply because of Perry's comments. Perry's words imply he met with someone outside of his existing circle, a circle that Dan is already in.

Excellent choice, has to be female, but for me Melissa Auf der Maur would be perfection for Jane's  She's also played with the Pumpkins and Hole, has the look down, fits perfectly into the alt scene...i'm sure she could handle Eric's style.

The only pisser is she is a busy girl currently with a new solo album just out, (as well as film work) so probably not...oh well.

So it looks like Duff left because Velvet Revolver are getting back together with a new singer.
At least that's what plenty of the news outlets are saying and there's a quote attributed to Dave saying as much.
I can understand him wanting to be in a band he had a hand in creating vs being in Jane's and I've got no ill will.

Good luck in whatever you do Duff. :)

Now as far as Jane's next bass player is concerned I still have no idea but I guess we'll know by the time 10/17 rolls around.
