Wow...thanks leviticus. I appreciate that a lot. :tiphat:

Just to illustrate one of the things I'm talking about, a person could cue up both mixes, and play the new one from about 00:18 - 00:25, then play the same part on the radio mix, which translates to about 00:42 - 00:49. The differences will be crystal clear.

While the nuances in Perry's delivery have been muted on the new version, listen to the old one and you'll hear all of his attitude and inflections. The new mix sounds like you're hearing Perry, and everything else, through cotton stuffed in your ears. Go back and forth between the mixes. The guitar in the new mix is so saturated with reverb that it drowns out all of the more subtle sounds. Listen to the little bass pluck details on the radio mix, right after Perry sings "I am the red flag that you wave" and before his next line. Now listen to that same part on the new mix, and those details are all but completely lost. All of the crispness and nuance and color is strangled out of the track, and we're left with a foggy sonic murk. Perry seems to be singing to us from down in the basement.

That's just part of what drove me nuts about the newer mix. Even considering how it fits into that loudness wars crap, the this new version still seems bizarrely muddy. The thing that really gets me is that we probably will never hear crisper, more dynamic versions of the rest of the songs on the album. By the time we hear them they'll all have been submerged in aural muck. Hopefully there's some kind of Hyperleaked type of thing and we can hear the entire album in a nice crisp form.

I think we can all agree about "He thought he knew me back in the day, when I was down, but now it's..." right? That seems pretty clear. I kinda think it's possible that the next word was "him," as in "when I was down but now it's him __________." Maybe?
"He thought he knew me back in the day, when I was down, seems no body helped" :noclue: I hear this although im sure im totally wrong  but its gotta be hell or helped
I just noticed in the first chorus or whatever he says "but" and in the 2nd chorus the "but" is left out
If I try to just hear it phonetically, it sounds like "when I was down but now it's him flyin' hell." I know this is wrong, but it's as close as I can get. There's some word or words that sounds like flyin' or fryin' or tryin' or cryin'.

ha ha a slam at "help wanted" no doubt .. good one perry .. i never used to be able to figure out what perry was singing about .. its always funny after i read the lyrics i'm like duh .. its something about the phrasing of his vocal delivery .. used to sound like a whole nother language to me when I was in high school first getting into janes .. nice to know somethings don't change with perry ..

jasper .. i know the mp3 isn't the whole cause of the sound change but .. correct me if i'm wrong .. isn't the radio mix a wave??? .. in my opinion mp3 is total crap for listening to anything .. it compresses and muddies up everything .. but i will agree that there is a good chance they thru some modern mastering crap at this recording and that affected the clarity as well .. i just wouldn't discount the butchering effect of converting to mp3

i don't like that the janes boys can put out a record like this and get away with thinking its good. it wouldn't be hard for janes to play this recording side by side with any of their numerous classics and say ... nope not there yet, try again .. but i love the positivity of this board so i will leave my gripes at that ... for now ....

I gotta say I love it...the more I listen ...the more I hear.......The little arabic trills in the intro......The added delays...and the way they trail off. I get what Jasper is saying about the dynamic loss.....I think a huge part of that is the Mp3 thing....I hate that format...Even with my messed up ears I can tell the difference.... on a laptop ta boot...saw this http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/03/mp3 ... t-128-320/and nailed it...and thats still Mp3...I like my Jane's with all the dynamic range...Hope the album version has that....But I dig it ;)

Ha! I knew that you would be the one to get to the bottom of it! This is going to sound like bullshit, but I did briefly consider "cryin' help" when running through the possibilities, but it didn't seem to make sense. I didn't see how Eric was crying for help, because I didn't think of Help Wanted. The other thing is that when Perry said "down" I took it to mean cool, not sad or depressed or lowly or whatever. So, yeah, I couldn't make it make sense. The other thing was that I didn't think help sounded enough like help--it still sounded like hell.

I'm glad it's solved. :thumb:
