Still no official word on this, but this site speculates that the 1 week delay is due to a bunch of other releases coming out that week:

The first new Jane's Addiction album in eight years, The Great Escape Artist, has had its release pushed back one week from September 27th to October 4th. No official reason was given for the delay, but it seems likely that it was done to avoid a traffic jam of rock releases on that date, including new records from Blink-182, Chickenfoot and Switchfoot, as well as a 20th anniversary deluxe reissue of Nirvana's Nevermind. The new Jane's disc follows up the band's 2003 effort, Strays.

Ah bummer but I don't guess another week will kill any of us.
