WORDS - spoken album intro tribute to ritual - hated the chorus and took it out but otherwise felt it had a really great Damned feel .. sounds like neat neat neat .. shortened it into a nice short punk song .. imagined mike watt on this one .. one of my faves on this record
UNDERGROUND - good riff .. again don't like the chorus at all .. to dumb and cheesy .. so i took it out .. threw in the "im a" as tribute to "i'm proud to be a" .. sounds monotonous and repetitious now like say mountain song or whores .. also has a nice stooges feel
SPLASH - i mostly liked this song for a pop song .. it falls in the "don't wanna miss a thing" category of guilty cheesy pleasure, but it also still annoys me .. since i liked it i didn't do a whole lot to it .. thought "we've been smokin and drinkin ... " sounded better as the first verse .. more rock n roll .. didn't like the spacy empty spot in the middle so i took it out .. threw the solo in early to give the song a little more breathing room .. couldn't make a dance remix cuz it's too slow and rock n rolly
CURIOSITY - such a cool riff .. but most of the song blows .. love this loop with all the crazy echo shit in the back ground .. took perkys drum fill and looped it to give it a more tribal beat .. loved the "look away" tried to extend it since it goes by so quick in the original song .. not enough lyrics or good parts to do much else so i went for an "of course" feel and just repeated it ..
BROKEN - i kinda like this song .. a guilty pleasure but more the kind that i don't mind playing it for friends .. again i didn't do much .. but loved extending the song especially daves melodic lead line guitar part .. needed to be in there more .. don't like the choppy edit at the end of my remix but couldn't figure out how to get it more perfect .. if i am not obsessing over it i don't notice it tho
I'LL HIT U BACK - this is probably my favorite remix .. i love the music .. wanted to hear it more .. hated a lot of the original song .. especially the "forget that" over dramatics .. ugh vomit .. i just really like how this one turned out a lot .. i was at a perky drum clinic and he was talking about how he tries to make the drums sound like whatever the song is about .. for example .. he was trying to make his beat for mountain song sound like a drum set falling down a mountain .. he was trying to sound like a ticking clock on pets as in countdown to end of the world or aliens or whatever .. stuff like that .. well i added this extra thwap on this remix .. so it goes "i'll hit u back ... thwap thwap" .. anyway .. i think it sounds like a knock out 1 -2 punch on that part .. thought stephen my dig that
IRRESISTABLE FORCE - i entered this in the remix contest and had the multi trax .. this is the only one i had multi trax for and the rest was strait from the cd .. i tried to give this one a more tribal old school janesy feel .. i was thinking of obvious and the old kettle whistle .. the intro reminds me a lot of the cures 'prayers for rain' .. the middle break down "galaxy merger" part went for a frusciante feel .. i also like how i put little pauses that sound like in sci fi movies when there is some atomic explosion in outer space you see the bomb launch then there is this little pause end then wham its like this slightly delayed explosion .. anyway .. i also paid tribute to both "my sex and my drugs and my rock n roll" and the little "goodnight" at the end of classic girl with the add on reprise .. no i don't think the verses sound out of sync .. i get why others might .. but i like how i synced up the "late late late" show its kinda off time jazzy rythm in my mind .. but yeah if ur not totally paying attentions stuff sounds clunky .. meh .. i dig it ... oh i really really liked the last chorus that had "some may call it a lucky shot" so i made all the chorus's go that way .. and dropped out the big rock chorus to give it a more janesy open with bass only feel .. i really hated the "bangin and bangin' part it is horrible and its gone now .. whooo hooo .. ps .. this youtube posting of this song has 3400 plays .. holy shit .. i am in shock!
ULTIMATE REASON - really like the music in this one .. needed some hacking but tried to make it work .. went for a summertime rolls feel .. big build then bring it back down at the end .. would have loved to be able to loop the heavy part without perry over daves guitar .. none available .. wish it was longer more riffs but i am kinda burnt on tweaking this anymore so its done .. i was thinking led zepellin on this one .. reminds me of something off of physical graffiti mixed with whole lotta love and maybe a little pfp freeway .. a little 3 days at the end .. i really dont care for the "ooh its the ultimate" lyrics or vocal delivery but .. the guitar is so good and i guess it doesn't make me cringe too much .. multi trax would have resulted in less perry more guitar on that part .. i really love how the bass comes in at the quiet part
END TO THE LIES - surprisingly i ended up liking this remix a lot .. the song used to annoy me so much .. probably because the music really kicks on this and the lyrics and all are just way way too much .. in a bad way ... its a bit choppy but again .. multi trax would have helped .. after being super frustrated with this i stumbled on that short heavy delayed riff of daves and made it kinda work .. now i really dig it .. the first verse is a bit choppy but i don't notice it as much and i really love the intro and ending .. fuckin heavy .. so many bad lyrics .. i think i trimmed them pretty good .. much more listenable to me now .. especially by the end of the song .. this shit live would kill so much harder
TWISTED TALES - nice music in parts but this is the one that originally sounded like coldplay to me .. and i don't really like coldplay very much .. definately not when they sound like this .. so i gutted it .. yup .. tells a little story at the end of the cd .. kinda mellow funk .. real simple .. i had some ideas for this one but i couldn't get certain sounds to line up without sound like a total train wreck ..
so basically i found the orginal album unlistenable .. and angering .. had a lot of cool parts but so many bad parts too .. i am not alone .. for the most part this record got bad reviews .. i wanted it to sound like janes addiction again .. and in a lot of ways i think i pulled it off .. i really really suggest you give it more than a quick listen .. it took me a couple weeks to not get a wierd jolt where the old parts of the old bad versions used to be .. the edits aren't perfect but i think they still kick ass .. once u get over the old songs this record is quite enjoyable for me .. again i can't listen to the old version because it is so bad .. this one i can at least listen to and dig without wanting to turn it off .. and there are parts that really feel like that old janes to me .. which makes me happy .. hope u dig it .. thanks for checking it out!!!
I will go on record to say that TGEA is actually great. I have listened to this record way more time than Strays. I just wished that they play more songs live. What is the point of making a record if you don't play the songs of the album you are promoting? Same with Satellite Party, i really didn't feel it was bad at all. I never understood why they didn't play more songs off the album. Half assed janes songs don't count.

I think that they tend to play more new songs right before the record comes out .. then if the record does not sell well they revert back to the old hits .. in the case of strays it seemed they played a lot of the newer material live .. satellite party i think they started out playing mostly new material .. then it seems the record didn't move off the shelf at all and they just did janes covers .. tgea is a whole different beast .. i don't think most of it was written as a live band .. a lot of it is disected and looped (not just my remix, the actual original record) cut and pasted .. written with several different songwriting helpers .. and then perry kinda added his thing afterwards .. it did not grow out of live jams as a band .. it grew out of studio cut and paste writing .. which means they have to work backwards to try and play it live .. they have already tried a couple of these songs and used backing trax which is hugely disappointing .. but also an indication that they are not comfortable at all with these new songs as live songs .. coupled with the bad reviews and dismal record sales and lack of a single that is gonna go anywhere .. it is likely this record will take a back seat to the old janes catalog live ..
even tho i don't care for the new songs .. i think janes could put on a great show if they really mixed things up a lot more .. including songs from tgea, sat party, spread, strays, pfp, old janes .. they could make something really cool that includes the new and the old and that would help the record sales at least .. but more likely they will just play the old janes setlist with one or maybe 2 new songs thrown in and burried
Trevor, I enjoyed your remix of IF but I just can't get into what you've done to the rest of these songs.
Maybe if you'd had the multi-tracks for the rest of the album it would have helped but this is mostly unlistenable.
