From a Toronto paper ......looks like Tahitian Moon makes its debut

Artist: Satellite Party

The Opera House, Toronto - August 10, 2007

By JASON MACNEIL - Special to Sun Media

TORONTO - Perhaps the only predictable thing about Perry Farrell is that he is so unpredictable. It should come as no surprise then that his new band Satellite Party wasn't exactly your typical rock and roll outfit last night at The Opera House.

Sure, the group performed a handful of the tracks from its debut album Ultra Payloaded which made up most of its roughly dozen-song set. However, it seemed that the biggest moments of the evening were for Farrell's earlier gems with Jane's Addiction.

And sensing that it wouldn't be a bad idea to toss out one or two such staples early, Satellite Party opened the show with the rollicking Ain't No Right from Jane's Addiction 1990 album Ritual de lo Habitual.

Wearing a black vest, matching gloves and gyrating throughout the early portion, Farrell was a bundle of energy starting out, often glad-handing with the audience in front when not dancing alongside his sassy wife Etty Farrell. However, things got off to an odd start with Farrell's battery pack falling off, resulting in him being stationary for a few fleeting moments.

"I lose that battery pack every night, sorry about that," he said prior to the garage-ish Tahitian Moon and the rather rambling Insanity Rains, the first effort of new material on the rather short night.

Those who couldn't wait for last night's show reportedly had the chance to see both the opener and headliner at a free concert staged Thursday afternoon at Yonge and Dundas Square and announced at the last minute. But judging by the past few weeks, it's a miracle the group is mounting a North American tour at all.

The band, fronted by the Jane's Addiction/Porno For Pyros (and Lollapalooza founder) lead singer Farrell, has had its share of change late last month thanks to the departures of drummer Kevin "Figg" Figueiredo and former Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt. Bettencourt, who co-produced Ultra Payloaded, stated one of the reasons for leaving the band was being "uncomfortable with the direction of the lineup and liveshow." Considering the tour began just a few days ago, Farrell was left with few options.

However, with drummer Jordan Plosky and guitarist Nick Perri, Satellite Party forged on with Hard Life Easy despite it coming across a bit flat as Etty Farrell split time between singing and looking as if she was on the verge of a strip tease.

Perhaps the biggest drawback to the entire evening was how short the set was. Nearly 40 minutes into the set Satellite Party was closing the main portion with Ultra Payloaded Satellite Party. But as nifty as that came across, it once again paled to the two biggest highlights of the show as the band tore into the funky, genre-fusing Been Caught Stealing that earned a loud ovation. Not faring too bad either was the follow-up Mountain Song that had the crowd hopping and singing along.

Opening for Satellite Party was New York City band Mink who delivered a decent 30-minute set featuring songs such as Talk To Me from their latest album. The performance, which also featured a cover of David Bowie's Suffragette City, was a bit tamer than their busking performance in the Eaton Centre on Thursday afternoon which saw them escorted out by security.

Hello
Hello Hello Hello
You know it's good to see you again
To be back with my friends
Where the work's not hard...

I remember driving to Toronto in 1998 from NYC, in my 1980 Mercedes 240 Diesel with my then girlfriend, let's call her "Abagail", to visit her parents who lived up in Canada. I brought a ton of recording equipment with me (back then it was just a four track a mic, a guitar, bass, and a drum machine). Spent the weekend in the country side of Gary Owen (a town) and had a great time, made some great recordings and made some great love!

When we got back to NYC, our relationship was over!

Wha Hoppnd?

So since then, Toronto and Canada always left a bad taste in my mouth...
People would just mention, Toronto or some Canadian city, and i'd be like, "You wont catch me driving up there anytime soon" or "be careful in Canada, you fall in love, and then you leave heartbroken"... something to that effect.

Since then my crew in nyc have reconnected with "Abagail" and seems like she is in a good space and we have talked through e-mail a few times... Best of Luck Abagail! Hey! I'm in Toronto! Remember Toronto.... here i go again....

Us musicians, artists, are very emotional people. Most who know me well, know that i am extremely emotional. Not just to relationships, but to friends and family almost more. I have many close friends, some i haven't seen in a while. Those friends you don't need to see for a while to remain close, when you see them you just pick up where you left off and boom!

I guess what i'm getting at is the movie Ratatouille. Have you seen it? Probably the best movie I have seen in years. Better than most live action films of the past 10 years. And best animated film since An American Tail. Thats' right, taking it back to '86.

So yes, i'm listening to the Rentals right now... Getting me in the mood to pick up my new Breedlove Acoustic Bass (thanks Nick for hooking that up!) and doing some playing.

Yesterday we performed Tahitian Moon on the radio live in the studio, the sound wasn't great but it was a thrill to perform that song, such a beautiful song. After we went out for some Korean BBQ (my favorite food/restaurant/dining experience), we headed over to Bovine Sex Club (A live rock and roll club). There was a band playing, very good one i might add, and Perry, Nick, Jordan, Etty and I were jonesing to play... So we got on and did Tahitian Moon again, and in the middle Nick's guitar went out, and we (well, I) kept vamping on the chorus changes, until his guitar sound came back... then we did, Mountain Song, and Stop!, and then Mink came up and did Aint No Right with Perry, and then i had to do it i climbed back behind the drums and rustled together a very drunk, end of the night, Whole Lotta Love! With Grant on Bass and a mystery Canadian musician on guitar, and Perry on vocals! What a treat! I love playing the drums, but i will tell you -drummers have it tough bro! WOW what a workout!

After the show i went back to the hotel and realized how drunk i was. I ate till my hearts content at Korean BBQ but, it was all meat and fish (by the way i tried Ox tongue and thought it was the best thing they brought out). The thing that got me was those two shots of Jagermeister. Jagermeister is not my drink, i knew that, but hard to pass it up when we are all together celebrating my birthday (Etty has declared it Carl's Birthday Week! YAY~!) Needless to say I had a ball, and it was a great jam on stage at the Bovine Sex Club, it was like the Cat Club but deeper stage. Great Stage for Rocking!

Tonight is the Opera House in Toronto.
About to leave from our hotel in a few and i have to clean up and re-pack.
Can't wait to play again...

See ya tonight Toronto,

Carl

Just some random thoughts here about these upcoming shows:

What would it take to really set this tour on fire? Would Perry & Etty have to do something really outrageous/shocking to generate PR?

How about a flashmob right outside the MTV studios?

If Flea and/or Frusciante made guest appearances on stage would that get the ball rollin'? I'm thinkin, YES. It might draw in Chili Peppers fans

Any ideas? I'm glad they're playing the older stuff now. Hopefully they'll be able to finish the entire tour.

Great review! Now, if we could get Perry to eek out one tune from SYTBS, it would be nirvana. Can't wait to see this show.
