Satellite Party at the John Varvatos party

Exuberance at Betsey Johnson

By SUZANNE GANNON - McClatchy-Tribune News Service

What's not to love about Betsey Johnson? Forty-five years into her fashion career - and 30 after she formed her own label - the mistress of fantastical whimsy put on a knock-out show Tuesday at Bryant Park. She summoned pioneer maidens of the prairie with bright calico prints in blousy dresses with ballooning sleeves and the brothel madams of the Wild West with come-hither hoop skirts sheer enough to reveal sexy knees.

Not a single model walked the catwalk in her own hair (Betsey herself was sporting a bleached blond coiff abundant with extensions); instead each donned a pink or blue or purple wig topped by a straw bowler.

Not one to be outdone, the designer herself cart-wheeled down the runway and finished in a split, her shiny green petticoats bouncing along, with green Dorothy shoes all a-glitter.

"It's easier than walking," said the designer about her cartwheel and added that she "never thought in a million years that she'd still be doing what (she) loves to do."

Back stage, the pink champagne flowed and clients and fans nibbled on over-sized cupcakes dressed in pink icing and monogrammed with the letter B.

"Everything is beyond exploding," she said about the business she has run with her partner for 30 years, managing to remain "dear great friends."

Nearby, Perry Farrell, the founder and lead singer of the band Jane's Addiction and founder of the Lollapalooza music festival, and his wife, Etty, basked in Johnson's 500-watt radiance and posed for the camera.

Long-time clients, the two were each sporting one of Johnson's designs, Etty in a green satin strapless and Perry in a super-slender black pinstripe jacket. Together they cooed, "We love Betsey."

Farrell is to headline tomorrow evening with Satellite Party, his newest gig, at the John Varvatos party (he's the face of the fall 2008 campaign), which conveniently occupies an old haunt: the former space of the legendary CBGB. When asked if the party was open to this reporter (an unabashed fan), he demurely replied, "I don't think you can get in if you don't know about it by now."

Wonder what he'll be wearing.

Great! Perry to perform in a TINY club for a bunch of aholes who could give a shit!
Maybe I'm being greedy. He was very fan friendly during the SO tour but I hate it when real fans locked out for events like this.

"I've been playing with Perry for twenty years, and actually, Jane's Addiction never played at CBGBs," said Dave Navarro. "So to be able to come and not only celebrate John Varvatos' line, but also perform at the original CBGBs-this is a big deal for us." Navarro got philosophical while talking about his host, Varvatos: "I love the idea that it's high fashion and street fashion fused together," he said. "One of the things that I like about fashion-and certainly his brand of it-is that he doesn't offer just one thing, and human beings aren't just one way. We all have different feelings, and identify with different elements of the human condition, and he taps into a multitude of conditions."

Fashon Week: Varvatos' Rock and Retail

Now that he's turned legendary rock club CBGB into a clothing store, John Varvatos has to prove that carefully tended vestiges of indie cred can mix successfully with slick big-brand marketing.

Sure, Varvatos built a booming business partly by channeling his rock star fantasies into ad campaigns with musicians like his current pitchman, Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell. He can get Farrell and bad boy guitarist Dave Navarro to play a corporate gig, as they did last night at the space now rebranded, like some glossy condo tower, with its downtown address: 315 Bowery.

But sometimes bad boy rockers ditch the corporate script. During his brief but energetic set, Farrell referred to the space as CBGB. He set the crowd cheering when a backup singer/dancer (his wife), clad in a corset-style mini-dress, clambered onto a speaker and spread her legs in a split so Farrell could plant kisses on her crotch. The moment was way more CBGB than buttoned-down VF Corp., the $7.6 billion manufacturing company that owns Varvatos along with Lee, Wrangler, and other brands.

It's not clear whether the cheering, dancing youngsters in the audience would be back to buy Varvatos' clothes. But the designer is confident enough in the corporate-meets-club retail model that he's searching for similar spaces in other cities.

"If you're going to do it well, you have to find something that has history that adds some aura to it," he said in a crowded V.I.P. backstage area before the show, as Farrell and Navarro shilled for the line and Gossip Boy Chace Crawford posed for photos. "You can't fake this, you know--an old club, old bar, old church, house, whatever it is that has some history you can kind of live with."

Attention-getting space is important, since retail stores are a powerful growth engine for his company right now. The Varvatos brand is one of VF's retail stars, among a small group of brands that boasted strong comparable-store sales gains in the second quarter ended in June.

Varvatos said the company is closing in on another Manhattan store--on the Upper East Side--and is looking in San Francisco. He added that sales rose 36 percent over the past year and the company is racking up its most profitable year ever. A European rocker is on tap for the next ad campaign.
