I wish I could have recorded Perry's speech at the Rock Hall.
He really got into talking about Satellite Party in great depth.
I can remember him saying that he wanted to make a movie.
I don't remember him saying that it was in the works though.
This could be another situation where the bands success could dictate things IMO.

The only full time members are Nuno and Kevin though.
So I don't think the other's commitments will factor into things that much.
You mean like Nuno and Figg from DramaGods (used to be Population One and just released a studio album a couple months back?)
Yeah to hear Perry tell it they're the only full time members right now.
I guess you're saying you think that what DramaGods are up to could interfere with Satellite Party?
If that's what you mean then yeah I guess it could complicate things.
Again and it's just my opinion I think a lot depends on Satellite Party's success.

Yeah I am just not too sure about the commercial viability of this project... I just gotta think that they have to approach it with a more "generic" pop-friendly approach if they want it to be a commercial success...

I have the utmost respect for Perry trying to do something creative and unique. I just saw Les Claypool and his Fancy band and it was awesome! But I don't think Les is getting rich off of that. I just think he is having a great time playing with awesome musicians.

I could be wrong, however, but it just seems like the marketability is extremely limited. Who knows, I mean both Jane's and Porno have had radio airplay on KROQ in Los Angeles, which is a fairly good determinant of potential marketability... So far only Indie 103 has played TPC, and noone has played SP to my knowledge...

A really great read I found today Kevin Figg talking about recording the Satellite Party disc.

On November 3, 2005 I got the call one week before having to head into the studio to start recording Perry Farrell's Satellite Party album. The good thing is that I had rehearsed and performed 6 tracks for our performance at Lollapalooza in July, but there were 14 tracks on the record. That didn't leave me much time to learn and get creative with the other 8 tracks. Being my first real "professional session" I got right to work! After all, it's Perry Farrell from Jane's Addiction we're talking about here! I wanted to be as prepared as I could.

The music of Perry Farrell's Satellite Party is a mix between rock, pop, techno, house, and electronic, a very cool and distinct sound. It was a different approach on the drums for me. If any of you know the DramaGods music, it's more of the Bonham-esk approach, hitting hard with lots of energy! I still wanted to bring my feel to these songs but also try different things that I wouldn't have normally done with DramaGods. On one of the tracks I had to use thinner sticks for a lighter touch without losing the feel. Of course, there were plenty of tracks that were more on the rock side, and I was able to let loose and hit the drums. Some tracks were just a hypnotic kick and snare groove with a solid pocket and feel. Other songs were more on a house/electronic vibe and would bring some cool hi-hat work with all 4 on the floor. Saying that, I still stayed true to my approach, trying to bring a good feel, pocket, energy and playing for the song regardless of the different styles and feels.

The session took place at Jim Henson's Studio (old A&M records) and let me tell you when I walked in and saw the room I was recording drums, I was very excited! We tracked the drums into ProTools HD rig with a variety of mics around the two kits and room. Something cool and different to me was that both the top and bottom tom heads had mics. We ran everything really hot, maximum level, lots of compression on the room mics for the Bonham type sound which I love!

I had 2 different drum kits in the studio for this project. I recorded 4 or 5 tracks with my 1965 red sparkle Slingerland and the rest on a Gretsch. My Slingerland is a: 14x20 kick, 8x12 tom, 14x14 floor tom, 5x14 snare, along with a 6.5x14 DW maple snare, Yamaha 4x10 soprano snare. We rented the Gretsch kit from Drum Doctors: 22 kick, 12" and 13" tom, 16" floor tom, with an old 6.5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty, 6.5x14 Tama brass shell and a 5x14 Custom maple shell snare. We had a ton of different cymbals to choose from for different songs on both kits. And of course... my assortment of Vater sticks for the session: Power 5B, Super Jazz, 7A's, and T5 Mallets. We had all of the drum gear we needed to capture the right sound for each track and we used almost all the gear at some point during the recordings.

Several guests also performed on the record that Perry brought in including Flea and John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fergie from Black Eyed Peas, DramaGods vocalist/guitarist Nuno Betencourt and Peter DiStefano from Porno For Pyros. In the end I walked away very confident after tracking 14 songs in 7 days with 1 week of prep time before hand. The self-titled Perry Farrell's Satellite Party cd will be released in the early part of 2006.

I got that article from that link.
It's definitely worth checking out.
They have some pics from the recording session up there. :)

I've also edited my fist post to include some others that are involved in Satellite Party.
Also if you want to listen to some Satellite Party clips there's a link in that first post as well.

Now that you mention Steve Lillywhite I remember Perry going on about him at the Rock Hall.
Perry seemed to really respect his work and was heading to NY to work on the tracks with him when he left Cleveland.
I'm going to add Steve Lillywhite to the list of people working on the album.
Thanks for reminding me of him. :)

This is an old article but it gives us a little more info.

Flea, Frusciante Contributing To Farrell's Next Big Concept
04.29.2005 3:20 PM EDT

Satellite Party, a rock-musical hybrid, will debut at Lollapalooza.

When it comes to big ideas, Perry Farrell's certainly had a few. Of course, there's his much-lauded work fronting both Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros, two bands for which he served as the creative force. And that whole Lollapalooza thing, that was his idea. But ideas don't come much bigger than Farrell's next project, Satellite Party.

For months now, Farrell's been recording material he characterizes as a hybrid of electronic, rock, experimental house and hip-hop with guitarist Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme — yes, Extreme — and seasoned world-music percussionist Gabriele Corcos, who is married to "Entourage" actress Debi Mazar. But at its heart, Farrell says Satellite Party's much more than a band. In fact, it's not much of a band at all.

"I've basically created a musical, and the musical involves a group of artists who call themselves the Solutionists," Farrell explained. "What they do is create flash mobs, where the dancers and musicians and fashionistas and fine artists all get together and collaborate and do these flash mobs in the city. They become a nuisance to the city, and one of the flash mobs causes a riot. The main guy in the story gets hurt, and he's brought to a hospital where he meets this beautiful night nurse and asks [her] to have his friends bring a radio. They begin to listen to the radio together at night, and one night they are transported up to the heavens through this radio transmission ... there's a vast visitation of energy that takes them up to the heavens, where they are involved in this lovely gala. That's what we call the Satellite Party."

Again, it's a big idea. Nevertheless, Farrell's project has attracted major-label interest, and he's even lured some of music's biggest names to join the Party. The Black Eyed Peas' Fergie will appear on three of the self-titled disc's 13 tracks, which include "The Woman in the Window" and "You Make My Hard Life Easy." He's also recruited Porno guitarist Peter DiStefano, Joy Division/ New Order bassist Peter Hook and Red Hot Chili Peppers John Frusciante and Flea. Jack Irons, the Peppers' original drummer (and Pearl Jam's subsequent one), pounds the kit on a few tracks.

Beyond the Satellite Party album, which Farrell produced and hopes to release in early 2006, there's much more to this project than meets the ear.

"You're not going to just go into this place and watch it like a regular musical," he said. "I want to make it where it's like a dance party and people are participating in the Satellite Party themselves. The places we're going to go to, we're going to have to build a location, just like we're building Lollapalooza this year. We want to make it a very special occasion that people dress up for and participate in. It will take at least four months to render the visuals, to build the sets. I am combining a lot of different elements."

Farrell will debut his Satellite Party during this summer's two-day Lollapalooza event in Chicago but said it will be an abbreviated Satellite show. "An entire Satellite show would be basically a play with sets and everything else," he said. "We will bring the music, the musicians and perhaps the dancers, and then, maybe do just a short set to set a good vibe for people."

But, there's still one obvious question that needs answering: "Dude, Nuno?" Farrell said he met Bettencourt while attending a party at Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello's pad. "We got together and I come to find out that he, too, is kind of getting into a hybrid sound with his projects," Farrell said. "I'm thinking very carefully about how to choose the musicians for the project, because it's a hybrid of electronics and live playing. Not everybody can do that. He can, and he can deliver an incredible sonic boom with a guitar, but he can also pick up a beautiful flamenco guitar and be romantic."

Farrell also said another Porno for Pyros album isn't too far off.

"What's great about Porno for Pyros is that we never broke up — we just kind of couldn't get it together," he said. "But Peter and I have a whole album's worth of music that we never recorded properly. We have it on cassette tapes, actually, and Pete comes over and we play them. And man, what's kind of cool about it is, you don't have to live through that stuff anymore, because it's already recorded. All we have to do now is get in the studio and remember those days. It's a really cool thing, but it warrants full attention. I think most likely after the Satellite Party, then I would think to do a Porno record."

After reading that again there's a few more to add to the list in my first post.
percussionist Gabriele Corcos
Jack Irons, the Peppers' original drummer (and Pearl Jam's subsequent one)
Also between those two articles we know the disc will have 13 or 14 tracks.

StickyFingers made a good point in another thread in reguards to Perry's appearance at Coachella.
Perry sang two songs with Hybrid Dogstar and Kinky.
Dogstar sounds nothing like the track that was posted on the Lolla site last year.
I've never heard the song Kinky before and StickyFingers made the point it could be a Satellite Party track. I agree with him but I guess we'll have to wait for the release to come out.
