I'll venture a guess. So maybe Strays was a success cause True Nature and Just Because fit the radio format. The rest of Strays and all of Payloaded sounded closer to the late 80's, early 90's popmetal radio format. Too many vocal overdubs, KISS-like sing-alongs, flashy solos and prissy production. Am I being too critical?

A friend of mine who used to like Janes Addiction when he was in high school stopped listening to them when they broke up. He now listens to things like Tool and A Perfect Circle. I played him True Nature and he liked it and was surprised they still sounded good. I gave him my copy to listen to. He said he liked a few of the songs on the disc but would never buy the whole cd because the other songs were "gay".

I've probably said it a million times but there's no way they could have made another Nothing's Shocking or Ritual.

They're all different people now.

I didn't expect another Nothing's Shocking or Ritual and was pleasantly surprised by Strays.

I can't say why one record sold better or worse than the other. I know that its not a bad thing, in terms of longevity, for a group to split(or go on extended hiatus) at or near the height of their perceived success. Sometimes large lapses in time creates anticipation and crazy demand for reunion. The JA relapse tour was a smash 6 or 7 years after the spilt. Nine Inch Nails used to make a record once every 4-5 years or so and almost all of them did very well. Bauhaus split and 13 years later launched an amazing tour without any radio play. Its been about 9 years since Love and Rockets split and now there is suddenly great interest in their reformation. It will have been 9-10 years if Porno For Pyros were to get back together and I think they could do very well. Money is made by touring and the groups who have established themselves in the past have a big edge over the new startup bands. Satellite Party is new so they'll probably have to work a lot to establish a solid fan base since its a different style of music than Janes or Porno For Pyros fans are used to.

The time gap between Ritual and Strays was probably too big.

The relapse reunion should have be followed by an LP (and not a collection of rareties with two brand new recordings only). Since they failed in doing that, JA actually became a sort of dead soul, a ghost.

Strays may be pretty pleasant to listen to, it is not a part of JA legacy.

I guess you do not have three attempts when you want to relaunch a band.
You succeed or not. That's all. JA didn't succeed in the right time.

And the train has passed its way.

I will always love JA's members music, but the magic is gone. Gone with my youth.
Now I'm an old man. And JA is dead.

But I can't wait to ear next SP's release.

in a financial sense yes, he was a failure while he was alive. in an artistic sense no he was brilliant. notice in my orginal post i said they were good recordings. i don't think its ridiculous to probe for answers into why something falls extremely short of expectations.
