I must admit to being a little perturbed by all of this. The happy little post count next to my name will show that I am not a hugely active part of this community and that will inevitably will mean that I have little license to comment on this particular matter, but I think the grief Naked and Disfigured is receiving is pretty sad.
I read here, and I am grateful for the information that's been shared in this interview, but some of what's come out really does make me bristle. I want to know as much as everyone else in the die-hard Jane's Addiction community what might be going on, but why on earth is Etty spokesperson on matters relating to Jane's Addiction?? If she's being interviewed as a 'member' of Satellite Party, then full steam ahead with that. If she is being interviewed as Perry's wife, fine...full steam ahead with dinner party stories etc. But delving into stuff like contents of the boxset (as well as other aspects of JA-related issues ) just seems bizarre to me, especially as she really doesn't seem to know much about what's being addressed. That's not my assessment or opinion on what she's said, it's just pretty clear from her responses that there's a lack of clarity there. Obviously, she is married to man and will have opinions, and yes this is a forum for talking....but either speak with authority (in every sense of the word), or keep that sort of thing private. I can't think of (m)any instances where an artist's spouse has spoken in this way about their work, so is it really much of a surprise when there's some flack?
What it boils down to is that it just seems odd that a musician's wife is assuming the role of spokesperson for him in this way. Part of me just chalks it up to yet another quirk and as Jane's Addiction/Perry Farrell fan, lord knows we've all had our fair share of those. The main things is that we're (almost) all so desperate for word that we lap it up no matter where it comes from, but that doesn't make the situation any more comfortable. I fully get the Yoko comment and whilst it may not be pleasant, it really doesn't seem to me to be out of hand - if that sort of thing warrants 'warnings' in these parts, that really undermines what I think is a really valuable site. It's an opinion shared, another country heard from....it's not slinging mud like mud is slung elsewhere.
And even if it was...so what? Is the need for censorship really than great? Are well all so sensitive that we must cover our eyes at, let's say... the sight of three partially clothed adults on an album cover? If so, give me a white album cover now and be done with it.
