What is record store day??

Give Your Local Record Store a Spin this Saturday
Posted by Melinda Newman

This Saturday marks the second annual Record Store Day. What is a record store you may ask? It's a small shop that sells round discs, sometimes even black vinyl ones, instead of small, shiny ones that look the same as DVDs. Ask your parents, they'll remember.
Seriously, Record Store Day was started a few years ago as a way to show appreciation for the dwindling number of independently-owned record stores that still sold physical CDs and/or vinyl. It's a way to salute the stores that either haven't been forced out of business since the big boxes like Best Buy, etc. started selling CDs as loss leaders or have managed to survive the digital age. There's still no better way to spend an afternoon to me than to go to Amoeba Records here in Los Angeles and comb the racks for goodies. It's a fast-fading pleasure.

This year, many artists have taken on Record Store Day as a cause célèbre.

Among the more than 100 offerings awaiting you on Record Store Day-and, no, you won't find any of these at the record department in Target, Best Buy or Wal Mart, include:

*Bob Dylan: "Dreaming From You" 7-inch single from last year's "Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series."

*Tom Waits: An exclusive, 7-inch single with live tracks recorded last summer. Tunes are "Lucinda/Ain't Goin' Down to the Well" and "Bottom of the World."

*Jane's Addiction: An exclusive, limited edition vinyl single of "Mountain Song," priced at $5.98. The same day, 180-gram vinyl versions of Jane's Addiction albums, "Nothing's Shocking" and "Ritual De Lo Habitual."

*Bad Religion: A re-release of the punk band's first release: its 1981's 6-song 7" EP.

*Derek Trucks Band: "Already Live," a 5-song EP consisting of live tunes recorded last Fall.

*Booker T. Jones: A two song 7-inch single with two new studio tracks his upcoming, first solo album in more than 20 years.
Additionally, a number of acts, like Queen's Brian May, have donated guitars fans can register to win.

So I called the Best Buy near me after reading your post this morning.
Here's that conversation and what happened:

Me: Do you have the new Jane's Addiction Box Set A Cabinet Of Curiosities?

Mallory: Yes we do.

Me: Well it's not supposed to be out until the 21st.

Mallory: Well we have it.

Me: Can I come up and get it now? Today?

Mallory: Yes.

Me: Alright I'll be up there in a few. Thanks.

So I throw on some cloths and head over to the store.
I look around and can't find it anywhere and ask some dude for help.
He says that they're not out until the 21st.
I tell him yes I know this but I just spoke with Mallory and she said I could get it today.
He's not making me happy so I go over his head and explain to his supervisor.
He sticks to his company rules and I get almost no joy.

I say almost because to placate me he does agree to let me at least have a look.
I followed him to the back of the store and he pulls a couple copies out of a box.
He tells me they only have eight of them.
At this point I'm telling him please let me take my chances at the register.
He again states it's against company policy and that the store and himself could get into trouble.
He further explains that the distributors would penalize the store for selling it early.

I can tell he's starting to sense my frustration.
To be quite honest I was pissed.
So to get me to leave he says he can hold the Box Set for me and I can pick it up Tuesday.
I let him know that I actually want two of them.
One for myself and one for my best friend who's Birthday is Thursday.
He agrees to put two copies aside for me and gets all my info.

I can tell you a couple things that I noticed while holding the set.
First off it's a little wider than a normal CD.
Approximately two inches taller than a CD.
The depth is about equal to six CD's stacked on top of one another.
The top of the box has Jane's Addiction burned or painted on it.
Inside the shrink wrap in the back is a piece of paper with some details.
The only things I managed to remember were two of the tracks on the bonus disc.
They are Mountain Song and Of Course.
I'm not sure which show Mountain Song comes from.
Of Course of course comes from the 7/24/91 show.
Sorry I can't remember the rest of the tracks on the bonus CD but I was pretty frazzled by that point.

Amazon has 30 second samples of all the tracks up on their site now too.

I think they sound a little better than the samples at the Barnes & Noble link I posted.
They also play all the way through without you having to start each song.

NS - FYI:
I Just went to my local BB and tried to use your experience to squeeze one out of them a day early.
To my dismay I was denied  , but I also was able to see one (out of the four they had).
You described the packaging to a "T", the bonus CD tracks I remember seeing were:
Then She Did, Standing In, Of Course, Mt.Sng...Sorry can't remember the fifth.
The bonus CD must be inside the box, I did not notice it shrink wrapped to the outside.
