Tom Morello of Street Sweeper Social Club

Julie Wagoner - May 25, 11:04 PM

If you are headed out to the Nine Inch Nails/Jane's Addiction show tonight at Fiddler's Green, make sure to get there early for Tom Morello's latest project, Street Sweeper Social Club. Morello, former guitarist for Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, recently joined forces with The Coup's Boots Riley to render "revolutionary party jams" to the masses. Their album arrives in stores June 16th but why wait to hear their music? Join the revolution by seeing them live on tour with NIN/JA this summer.

Examiner: So what are you particularly proud of with the debut album?
Morello: It's definitely the hardest rocking record that I've ever been involved in - in a very long time. Playing with Boots Riley has been pretty amazing. I was a big fan of his work before we formed Street Sweeper Social Club. One of the things I am most looking forward to is exposing his lyrical talents and his exotic dance moves to a bigger audience.

Examiner: You’ve been a part of a band, a solo act, and part of a duo – so why do you choose to be involved with so many different projects?
Morello: It's kind of a matter of following my muse. When Rage Against the Machine broke up, Audioslave formed. When Audioslave broke up, I started doing the Nightwatchman full-time. That's how we became acquainted was the Nightwatchman tour. And, I realized what a brilliant lyricist he was. We were actually friends before we were in a band together. There's a very clear division of labor. I write the music; and, he does the lyrics.

Examiner: Which artists shaped your current sound?
Morello: Since Rage Against the Machine, I've really loved music that is super heavy and super funky. I think that really comes to creation in Street Sweeper Social Club. The idea with this record was to make revolutionary party jams - songs that have an acidic as well as a witty lyrical content but smashingly rocking. And, the tour right now with Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction. we've only played in our whole history, we've only played about 20 shows. The first show was in Los Angeles at the School of Rock. It was for 11 year olds. Our second show was at the Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison in upstate New York. The second audience was of convincted felons. The audience for this tour is somewhere in-between. So, we are well prepared.
Examiner: (laughs) That's quite a range there. Were those audiences harder to entertain?
Morello: Initially, I wasn't sure how the fans would respond because essentially we had very little music. But, the audience has been great. We go out there every night not saying, "Please, we hope you like us." We are there to kick your ass. There will be a salvage ass-kicking in Denver. I gurantee it.
Examiner: Can't wait!
Examiner: If you had to pick one lyric to stick with your audience after the show, which one would it be?
Morello: If I had to pick one lyric to stick in the head - some of my favorite rock & roll lyrics are not necessarily the deepest ones. For example, in the first single, "100 Little Curses," there's a soccer stadium like chant that goes, "Wo ohohoh oh." It would probably be that one because they're going to be remember the song for a long time. I want them singing soccer stadium anthems as they leave.
Examiner: We kind of need that here. Europe has it with soccer. We kind of need that here with our music.
Morello: (laughs) It's long overdue.

The "NINJA" tour kicked ass in Denver

Nine Inch Nails and Janes Addiction rock out Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre
May 26, 2009

In a surprise last minute switch, Nine Inch Nails opened up the night for Jane's Addiction. It’s unclear why, when it is afterall, Nine Inch Nails' last tour, ever. Either way, a stellar performance by Jane's Addiction justified giving them the closing spot.

At this point, a paramount display of musicianship and stage presence is only expected from NIN lead vocalist Trent Reznor, and his band. However, the unlikely opener exceeded their usual and notoriously energetic reputation.

For both bands, it all seemed to just come together. The weather held up, and the sold out Fiddler's Green didn’t feel overwhelmingly crowded.

Perhaps it was the good vibe set by the opener for both bands, Street Sweeper Social Club, that got things going so nicely. Street Sweeper is the band of Rage Against the Machine’s guitarist Tom Morello.

While Reznor said his thank you’s and goodbye’s to Denver, Jane's Addiction lead, Dave Navarro, talked a little friendly trash. Given that Jane's Addiction is from Los Angeles, and The L.A. Lakers are in a tied up Western Conference Championship series against the Denver Nuggets, it was only appropriate.

“You won’t be mad when we beat you right?” a smirking Nevarro shouted out into a riled up crowd. “It’s okay, music is above sport, right?!”

We shall see Nevarro, we shall see.

Last Night: Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails at Fiddler's Green

By Jon Solomon in Last Night's Show - Wednesday, May. 27 2009 @ 8:46AM

Jane's Addiction & Nine Inch Nails

Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre
Better Than:
Seeing Dave Navarro hanging out with porn stars.

Near the end of Nine Inch Nail's set, frontman Trent Reznor said this current outing with Jane's Addiction would be NIN's last tour. It seemed like an odd way for NIN to go out after being one of industrial music's prime players for the last two decades and then having a farewell tour opening for Jane's Addiction.

Not a bad way to go out, all in all. Reznor and company went out on a high note, delivering a solid set of nearly twenty songs that spanned Reznor's two decades of making music under the NIN moniker. Halfway through the quartet's set, NIN got the pit stirring on the hard-hitting "Burn" (from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack) and followed it up with the equally propulsive "Gave Up" from 1992's Broken.

NIN wasted little time between songs; Reznor said they were trying to fit as many songs as they could in the time they were allotted, which was roughly an hour and forty-five minutes. The group knocked out "Dead Souls" and "The Day The World Went Away" before darkness fully set in and the act went through "Hurt," with the crowd singing along, lighters in hand.

Although NIN closed its set with a full-throttle take on "Head Like Hole," it still wasn't a match for Jane's Addiction's vigorous set. Jane's Addiction's opening song "Three Days" was all it took to pretty much forget NIN's set. The song began slow and lilting, but a few minutes into it, drummer Stephen Perkins started hammering out thundering tribal rhythms on the toms, while Dave Navarro dug in on the guitar, delivering some blistering riffs.

But while Perkins, Navarro and original bassist Eric Avery were in the trenches turning out one stellar cut after another, frontman Perry Farrell was easily the focal point of the group. Sporting skin-tight pants, a glossy black jacket and a scarf, the lanky singer lit up the stage, shaking maracas off his ass on "Three Days," and slowly, gracefully waving his arms like a Swan Lake reject on "Then She Did..."

Farrell's pipes are still very much intact, as he showed on the explosive takes on "Ain't No Right" and "Been Caught Stealing," which got a few gals so riled up they threw their bras on the stage. While there might've been some eye candy down in the pit, during "Ted, Just Admit It," scenes from Natural Born Killers (like the one where Juliette Lewis dances in the diner) and Bettie Page were projected on the white screen above the band. The scenes worked perfectly with Ferrell singing the phrases "nothing's shocking" and "sex is violent."

After closing the set with a righteous take "Ocean Size," the band came back for the dreamy "Summertime Rolls." Just before launching into a supercharged take on "Stop," Farrell told the crowd, " We will never die. We will never stop." The outfit closed its set with the drum-machine propelled "Jane Says," with Perkins on steel drums and bongos, and Navarro and Avery on acoustic guitars.

Critic's Notebook

Personal Bias: Having been a Jane's Addiction fan for two decades, I don't know how the hell I made it this long before actually seeing the band live.
Random Detail: A clip from the film The River Wild was show just before Jane's Addiction took the stage.
By the Way: The two bands were both on the first Lollapalooza tour in 1991. While Jane's Addiction broke up for the first time after the tour, it also pushed NIN further into the spotlight.
