The T.O. Do List: June 2 2009

BY Toronto Notes June 02, 2009 00:06

1. Here we go! For those youngsters who've had to put up with their elder Gen X brethren rhapsodizing about Lollapalooza (in the same way Gen Xers had to listen to their boomer parents go on about Woodstock), two Lolla alumni are banding together to give you a one-two hit of '90s nostalgia. The NINJA Tour marks the first Toronto appearane of the original Jane's Addiction line-up since the inaugural 1991 Lollapalooza tour — which was opened by a budding little industrial act called Nine Inch Nails. While Jane's infamously imploded after that tour, NIN, of course, went on to become an arena-rock institution. But, in deference to Jane's Addiction's trailblazing influence and career-boosting patronage, Trent Reznor and crew are gladly playing second fiddle on this tour: Nine Inch Nails will take the Molson Amphitheatre (909 Lakeshore Blvd. W.) tonight at 7:45pm, while Jane's headlines at 9pm. (Ex-Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello's new rap-rock project Street Sweeper gets the show started at 7pm.) $29.50-$99 from Ticketmaster.

NIN, Jane's Addiction put on stellar show

By JASON MACNEIL, SPECIAL TO THE SUN

Last Updated: 3rd June 2009, 2:25am

It might have been the concert of the summer, even if summer's not for another 18 days.

Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction - two of the granddaddies of alternative music - delivered different but equally stellar sets Tuesday night at a near capacity Molson Amphitheatre.

The tour, dubbed NINJA, sees Jane's Addiction reuniting with its original lineup for the first time since 1991. Meanwhile, Nine Inch Nails' singer/guitarist/keyboardist/gear smasher Trent Reznor has dubbed this trek the Wave Goodbye tour as the band won't be on the road again for quite a while.

Regardless, it was a show both groups were up for, with Jane's Addiction closing the evening with a winding, heady, rhythm-revolving 80-minute set. Led by the enigmatic Perry Farrell, the quartet opened with the lengthy and meandering Three Days which set the tone thanks to guitarist Dave Navarro's solo work and drummer Stephen Perkins' primal, tribal fills.

While the band was nowhere near as frantic or manic in their performance as Nine Inch Nails would prove to be, the hypnotic, groove-rooted nature to most of the material made tracks like the beefy Whores and Ain't No Right soar. Farrell, prancing at times when not using his shakers, appeared strong vocally early on but seemed to fade slightly near the homestretch.

But while the singer reached down deep and stretched for the closing notes to the crowd-pleasing Ocean Size and the relentless Mountain Song, the musicianship was never in question as bassist Eric Avery definitely shone during the gear-changing Pigs In Zen and Been Caught Stealing.

Speaking of stealing, Nine Inch Nails did their best to arguably steal the show with an incredibly exhausting and demanding 95-minute slab of industrial rock at its finest with several highlights, the first being Heresy. Looking like he had an axe to grind the entire night, Reznor at times upended microphone stands, keyboards, lighting fixtures and even himself during Survivalism.

Yet this anger resulted in a gig that rarely let off the gas pedal. From the early nuggets like Terrible Lie and the punishing Mr. Self-Destruct to the dance-rock groove of Hand That Feeds and 1,000,000, the band refused to slow down for themselves or the boisterous fans. This was realized early on when March Of The Pigs from The Downward Spiral had Reznor hopping and jumping around as if it 1994 all over again.

In fact, it almost felt like Reznor needed 20 years in order to craft such a well-rounded set list. Whether it was the rockabilly-meets-industrial feel of Wish which was a maniacal chore for new drummer Ilan Rubin to conquer or the frenetic guitar work of Robin Finck during I Do Not Want This, the band brought the same passion into each number and it clearly showed.

Other highlights included an interesting cover of Gary Numan's Metal, I'm Afraid Of Americans and Head Like A Hole which rounded out the main set. And while one of the band signatures in Closer was nowhere to be found, Reznor and crew returned for Hurt as hundreds of cigarette lighters (yes, not cell phones) flickered in the crowd.

Kicking the night off was Street Sweeper Social Club featuring Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello. Morello and his funky, hard rock group ran through a few songs from their upcoming album as well as a fine cover of M.I.A.'s Paper Planes.

Don't know if it's a dark beer, probably a heavy lager. Try either Golden, Canadian or Export Ale...I am from upstate NY so I tend to stick with the candaian beers.

Jane's Addiction & Nine Inch Nails @ Molson Amphitheatre, June 2

Alt-rock godfathers reunite to give the kids the Lollapalooza they never had

BY Chris Bilton June 03, 2009 12:06

Editorial Rating: *****
“The last time we were here I had dreadlocks,” says Jane’s Addiction’s ever-fey frontman Perry Farrell from the Molson Amphitheatre stage on Tuesday night. “Some of you had dreadlocks too!”

The “we” he’s referring to is, of course, the original Jane’s line-up with guitarist/reality-TV wonk Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and long-time holdout, bassist Eric Avery. Otherwise, the band has technically been here (with various guest bassists) a few times since “relapsing” back in 1997. But I digress; the main thing to keep in mind is that Jane’s are back, and they won’t be playing any songs from 2003's Avery-less Strays, or anything by The Panic Channel or Satellite Party. What they will be doing is staging a rematch of the first ever Lollapalooza tour by co-headlining with Nine Inch Nails. (If only they could have secured Ice T’s Body Count and an Andrew Weiss-backed Rollins Band, this reviewer would have been in missed-gig heaven.)

Back in the day (1991 to be exact), NIN were but a neophyte industrial act and Jane’s an about-to-implode gang of heroin-tempered egos. These days, the former are at the peak of their powers while Perry and co. finally seem ready to give the reunion circuit a proper go. Along for the ride is former Rage Against the Machine (I refuse to even acknowledge his other former band) guitarist Tom Morello’s new Street Sweeper Social Club project with Coup rapper Boots Riley — whom I would have seen had I not been trying to catch their 7pm set during rush hour. Again, digressions.

None of this matters as NIN emerge from a cloud of smoke and segue the intro track “Now I’m Nothing” into set-opener “Terrible Lie.” By the beginning of “1,000,000” from their excellent (and still free) album The Slip, head Nailer Trent Reznor is reliving his Lollapalooza days by punching over mic stands and heaving his keyboard setup to the ground. Soon, the nihilism finds its outlet in song as the band tears through the Nietzsche-inspired “Heresy,” along with fellow Downward Spiral cuts “March of the Pigs” and “The Becoming” (with Reznor adding some avant-garde piano to the latter).

Reznor introduces the next song as something he wrote with David Bowie, and we’re treated to a mind-blowing mid-set trio consisting of “I’m Afraid of Americans,” “Gave Up” and an incendiary version of the Natural Born Killers soundtrack jam “Burn.” The intensity continues right through the title track from 1999's The Fragile and a somewhat cursory inclusion of “Wish” (from the 1992 Broken EP). But it’s the insanely revved up take on “Mr. Self Destruct” followed by crowd-favourite “Head Like a Hole” where the set hits an incredible peak that seems perfectly constructed by Reznor to upstage the headliners. Even in the fading dusk light, the power of NIN is impossible to deny.

It makes sense then, that Jane’s Addiction snatch up the co-headliner baton by leading with their best song: the epically debauched “Three Days.” They seem to take a few minutes to gel, as Farrell’s voice sounds either tentative or extra languid. By the time they kick into the drum jam and Navarro’s extended shred-fest, everything is primed for Farrell to let out the iconic “erotic Jesus!” howl and reassure us that his voice is still in fine form.

In his painted on pants, leather boots, scarf and corset, Farrell looks especially tall and wiry, and he prances around the stage with an oddly balletic grace during “Ain't No Right” and “Pigs in Zen,” which is impressive as hell for any 50 year old. After another epic Ritual De Lo Habitual track (“Then She Did...”), the band go for the jugular with “Had a Dad” and the menacing groove of “Ted, Just Admit It...” — the latter coming complete with Natural Born Killers visuals and a confirmation that sex is still violent.

Closing the set with “Ocean Size” (which is apparently some kind of enviro-jock anthem, judging by the bro-down scene going on around me) and then quickly returning for an encore of “Summertime Rolls,” “Stop” and (naturally) “Jane Says,” the reunited Jane’s Addiction prove that despite whatever the members get up to in the off season — Perkins’ exceptional Banyan jams with Mike Watt and Nels Cline, Farrell’s under-appreciated work with Porno for Pyros or Dave Navarro’s tabloid-worthy endeavours — their true calling is perpetually recreating the brief musical peak that they hit in 1991.
