I think it's pretty wack, to be honest, but I'd attend if I lived there. Sure as hell would never go out of my way to see Jane's Addiction sans E, but no doubt it'll be a good time. I'm just glad they've all agreed--this group hasn't played together in 6 years, so I'm sure it's fun for them. Time to bust out a few Strays tracks of course...
But I'm ready for a club tour with EA

Jane's with Chaney is still better than 98% of all rock shows I've ever seen live, and it's probably the only way to see Strays stuff performed live. I wouldn't miss it. The big amphitheater shows were meh, but when I saw Jane's with Chaney in a bar, it was one of the loudest shows I've ever seen (and I've seen Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, etc.). Chaney's bass is extraordinarily fat-sounding. Don't deny yourself a great night of music out of protest for Avery's (hopefully temporary) absence.
But I couldn't agree with scabdates more. Bring the original Jane's to the small venues. Just be ready to have your finger on the "buy ticket" button the minute they go on sale. That Chaney/Jane's show I was talking about sold out in less than one minute.

Like I said, if you saw the Jane's 03 tour with Chaney in an amphitheater (as most people did for Lollapalooza), it was pretty weak. In fact, of all the Jane's shows I've ever seen, it was frankly the most forgettable.
If on the other hand you saw them in a small venue, you felt it. It raged. They do not suck. And Chaney's bass stood out as one of the STRONG points. It was every bit as much Jane's Addiction as this year with Avery, or 01 with LeNoble, or 97 with Flea.
I happen to think the only PURE Jane's was 1991 and everything before that, when they were hungry, on fire, when Perry's voice was full-on, when drugs wove themselves into the tapestry, pre-Dave's silly reality TV persona, yada yada yada. But I've seen a lot of Jane's shows, and one of the very best was the Chaney show in 03 at the Beaumont Club in Kansas City. I just can't listen to people say that Jane's with Chaney sucks when they don't. What sucked (and I think Perry&Co. would be among the first to admit it) - the 03 Lolla shows were weak. The venues were weak. Fan support was weak. Even the "true fans", the "Janeheads", the "Janeiacs", were completely, totally, WEAK (see Xiola.org). That whole year was a do over and the name of the album (which I happen to like a lot) "Strays" - was extremely fitting, and I don't think that was an accident.
But momentum has changed since then. For one thing, a lot of people may credit the return of Avery, and that's true, it brought a lot of those "lame fans" back (see Xiola today, they're all lovey-dovey again, for the most part). But I credit something else entirely, and maybe it's debatable ... I credit "Strays".
Why?
Because Strays brought in a whole new pile of fans. I'm a college professor, the students I teach are largely in the 18-25 age range. When I bring up Jane's Addiction, do you know which album the vast majority of them claim to love? Strays. Why? Because it was their generation's Jane's Addiction. Some of us oldschoolers may scoff at that. At the NINJA tour, I spoke to a lot of younger people after the show and while they were blown away, many of them claimed not to be familiar with most of the songs, and were disappointed that nothing off of Strays was played. I had to explain a few things to them. Yes, I heard more than one person say, "Why didn't they play Price I Pay?"
So I think Strays being allowed to settle in for the last 6 years plus the re-insertion of Avery + Trent Reznor being badass enough to allow Jane's to headline NINJA = a real resurgence of Jane's Addiction.
It wasn't just Avery returning. And we all knew this could be a very, very temporary thing. While some people would prefer Jane's to just die away without him, I certainly don't. That's why I support Jane's with Chaney or any other bass player they see fit to replace Avery with should he decide he's quits again.
Jane's with Avery at my NINJA show was not as good as Jane's with Chaney at my Beaumont show. I chalk that up to the venue more than anything else, but comments like "Jane's with Chaney sucks" just kinda annoy me, because someone might read that and actually believe it.
No. Jane's does not suck. No, the replacement is not pitiful.
I remember people in 97 who refused to go see the Relapse because there was no Avery.
THAT was pitiful, because the Relapse was magical, triumphant, amazing, religious, spiritual, and everything else in-between. ENIT was truly a mindblowing event. And that wasn't Avery up there, that was Flea.
But I digress. I couldn't even see Jane's+Avery+Porno for Pyros+Deconstruction+PsiCom+(insert another one of my favorite bands here) for that price. So it wouldn't matter who was playing, I blew my wad at Voodoo. But if I was rich, I wouldn't miss it.
