nah - I disagree - rock band can be fun - a group of people, some alcohol, goofing around - rock band can be fun. It's a lot cheaper than playing real instruments and it sounds a lot better

Yeah, can be fun with a group. Personally I'm not into the guitar/bass hero-ing, but drumming and singing is fun.
What I like best about this news is that it means multitracks of Been Caught Stealing will likely pop up soon after.. and I think those are cool (see Colors of Earth and Plants).
Is it true that Nothing's Shocking in its entirety has been released for Rock Band? I'd like to hear those multitracks. I just have "Mountain Song" but that's it.
And hopefully Ritual will all follow before long. As I mentioned a while back at xiola, it'd be funny if the way us fans finally get to hear the Three Days poem is thanks to Rock Band.

(still disappointed that wasn't included in Cabinet of Curiosities..

I played Rock Band for the first time last Summer and had a blast.
I attempt to play a real guitar but I've been a gamer for a long long time and my opinion changed after playing it.
I used to think a lot like Trevor and thought why would someone want to do that but it really is a lot of fun.
My Son has a shitload of games but he doesn't have this one yet but want's it.
If he gets it I'll play it for sure.
When I played last year the kids had a few Jane's tunes downloaded.
Mountain Song and Ocean Size for sure and maybe one more.
Anyway I played every instrument and sang and passed them in the easy mode.
When I tried it at the higher difficulty I got my ass handed to me but it was still a lot of fun.
The kids definitely had a good time laughing at me.

yeah - definitely a party game - shit Mike, we should have pulled it up when you were up last month
interestingly enough, Rock Band 3 has a "pro" mode, which has every note tracked - on top of that, they're apparently putting out a 102 key guitar w/ actual strings - still not the real thing, but a lot closer and theoretically would teach some fundamentals of playing (that's what the previewer said - I wouldn't know

)

The whole album was definitely released on the PS3 and 360. I'm not sure about the Wii.
The multi-tracks for Mountain Song that are out were taking from the Nintendo Wii version of Rock Band, where I believe due to a lack of DRM restrictions, it is a lot easier to copy things like that off than either the PS3 or 360 - but to be honest, since the recent 360 update that allows you to use regular flash drives, I haven't tried copying the album off. My understanding is that the drives get reformatted to a proprietary MS format - so it wouldn't be as simple as copying the songs over and plugging the drive into a computer to copy them off.
I know once you get the RB files off the system and onto a computer, getting the multi-tracks is trivial.

I think if you look at the rock band-esq games as playing
with music as opposed to just playing music - the draw becomes more clear. I don't pretend for one minute that slapping away at 5 buttons and toggling a little flipper comes anywhere near close to playing a guitar - but it is a lot of fun playing video games and listening to music, and being able to interact with the music in your gameplay is fucking awesome.
There are non faux-instrument games that you can interact w/ music to. There is an
awesome game called
audiosurf where basically you "ride" your digital music. Amazing stuff there.
