Jane’s Addiction’s new album, The Great Escape Artist, is about trying to escape your past. That’s all well and good, but we prefer digging up the past. Then sitting it down for some light chit-chat and perhaps a nice cup of tea. Hence our latest test segment “Review Your Old, Plug Your New,” in which we don’t let musicians promote their current album until they’ve gone back and re-evaluated one from yesteryear. In this case, we caught up with Jane’s frontman Perry Farrell to get his updated critique of Nothing’s Shocking, the band’s breakthrough 1988 studio debut. (Turns out, Farrell doesn’t like the sound of his own voice on the album. Unexpected!) With his debt to history paid, Farrell then regaled us with news of the much-anticipated The Great Escape Artist, which is the first new Jane’s Addiction release in eight years. I watched this video the other day and I've been disturbed since. I have to say this interview bothers me and makes me sad. Perry says he'd re-sing his vocals if he could?????

It was his voice and un-trained way of singing that made me fall in love with the band.

for some reason i cant load the vid .. but i would say its normal for perry not to like his voice on NS .. i am sure perky would say he hated the drum sound .. the production added an otherworldly feel to the music .. but at the same time .. took away some of what was great about the band .. thats why i pretty much only listen to janes bootlegs

but if "pf2012" was not happy with his vox he sure had / has no issue playing those tracks live [mostly for the worse] for the past YEARS.

should have put effort into getting more done [way back when], they are the only act that lived on 2 maybe 3 lps for their entire career.

and "ja's" / "ns" release was/ is a big part of the life line.

IMO - his opinion is hard to decipher when he wants to BS / dodge questions & beat around the bush.

i expect nothing else after tgea, but i realise thats not a bad thing.

If you can get the video to go, you'll see the proper context.

In terms of getting JA on the album, he mentioned it being a new experience for them. That they knew they were a great band and had great songs and great live performances - but they needed to translate that into an album form.

Perry wasn't trashing NS by any means, it's the normal "that was great, but I think it could have been better" hindsight.

it's great when were young and fearless, that's when most of the magic happens. Seems the older we get sometimes the more we want everything to be perfect. somehow in that, the magic gets lost.

for those that still can't get the video to play Perry did give NS 5 burning naked ladys out of 5 so he is not dissing the record he just said he'd like to re-sing his parts. but I have to ask why?why?why? There is nothing wrong with the way he use to sing, it was natural and free spirited. That captured the essence of being alive and being human, why must we always want to be so perfect? just play from your heart, draw from your heart, take pictures from your heart, speak from your heart, love from your heart good OR bad, that's whats real!

i might be alone in this but i really loved his voice on XXX. to me there is a noticeable difference to his voice when you make that leap from 86/87 to 88. that extra nasally, high whiney, otherworldly voice from xxx really blew me away and is what really hooked me. i know it's there on NS but it's not quite the same. now, that may just be the differing production values between the two albums but to me that's always been one thing about jane's that has made me "sad", the fact that they didn't get into the studio sooner and didn't get perry's 86/87 voice on tape.
