Jane's Addiction's "Jane's Addiction" Turns 25 Today

The band's self titled album was released 25 years ago (May 15, 1987) and I thought it would be fun to discuss it.
I'm curious when did you first hear it? Where were you when you heard it? What medium (CD, cassette, vinyl) did you first hear/purchase? How many copies of it do you own? Wouldn't it have been nice if the band would have released a expanded 25th anniversary edition?

This was the 3rd album I bought by Janes! I went in reverse. Ritual, Nothings Shocking, Jane's Addiction. I bought the cassette at Tower Records. I think I even had the cassette the read 'Pigs in Ten' rather than Pigs in Zen. Can't really remember.

 :bday:

Like bman, this was my 3rd JA album. Only bought it once (the only 'original era' album I bought once), still have my CD with the 'Pigs in Ten' typo:

I almost bought the version w/ the blue printed cover like this one:

Then of course that copy disappeared and it took ages for me to find a scan of that version

I'll have to give this a spin to celebrate today

I went in reverse, too. I have cd version 3. I bought it at a Sound Warehouse in early '92, because I just got my first cd player for Christmas '91. I had both Ritual and N.S. on cassette already. It didn't come in a long box, but one of those plastic sleeves with the cd enclosed at the top. I always wished the photos were bigger, and facing the right way. ha. It's the only version I've ever owned.

Holy shit, I just noticed something - the "Pigs in Ten" typo disc has the copyright year as 1988. The case/ucard has the correct 1987.

We don't have a scan for the regular "plain/no-typo" US version (just the german import) - wonder what the year stamp on that is?

:headscratch:

My guess, and it's just a guess, is the '88 date reflects the CD release rather than the copyright on the album as such. I am sure I said this before here or elsewhere: the record was not released on CD in '87. It was a long time before the CD was available. (It's hard to remember but the mid to late 80s was ruled by the cassette format, with vinyl sliding away.)

yeah, that was my thinking since the CD was released in '88 - just curious to me that subsequent pressings had the original copyright year of 1987 on them

:noclue:

Wow! Hard to believe it's been that long. Picked it up on cassette shortly after I heard Nothing's Shocking in '88. Immediately hooked by Whores, I Would For You, and the Sympathy cover (among all others). Shared the cassette with everyone I felt would appreciate it and eventually stretched it out so bad it sounded like everthing was detuned or I had too much cough syrup. Picked it up on way back on CD when the tape was eventually lost/stolen by some skag-still track it often. AMAZING record of their live energy and musicianship! Side note...used to have a poster of the cover art along with a massive Nothing's Shocking poster, which I am still trying to find after many moves (Arrgggggggggg  ). Oh well, still have the tunes. Thanks for reminding of how PSYCHED I was to experience it for the first time. Pax.

Just pulled out the four versions that I have of the CD. The first issue, which I bought at the time of its initial release, has the J-Card with the 1987 date and the CD with '88, as you already observed. It does not, however, have a typo for "Pigs in Zen." A subsequent reprinting carries the same info, along with the typo in the title, and it is clear that the discs were manufactured by different companies. (The first says "Made by Discovery Systems -- an American Company 34E0300A" on its interior ring, while the other doesn't have a company name, though it does appear to bear a date stamp (perhaps): "510042 6/90 1DA9X.") The dates appear to change in another reprinting so that both are '87, as seen in the blue reflective disc. This one also has the catalogue number imprinted on the disc ring along with " 7/91 10DA1X," which again, I assume is the date of production. The German version I have, lastly, bears a WB imprint through special arrangement with XXX, and this one has 1991 on the disc and '87 on the J-Card.

All really silly details, I suppose.
