The Modern School Of Film’s FILM: MASTERS Series
Double Feature! New Series!
GIFT / DRUGSTORE COWBOY
Hosted by Modern Film School founder Robert Milazzo, The Modern School of Film’s FILM: MASTERS series screens movies hand-picked by renown cultural figures, followed by in-depth discussions with them. Our first installment celebrates the 25th anniversary of the band Jane's Addiction, featuring an in person appearance by the band's Perry Farrell who will present the 1993 cult favorite he directed, GIFT, which features a surrealistic blend of live footage of the band and fictional vignettes. GIFT is on a double bill with his favorite film pick, DRUGSTORE COWBOY (also celebrating its 25th anniversary). DRUGSTORE COWBOY director Gus Van Sant will join us as well, schedule permitting. The discussion is between films.
Perry Farrell & Gus Van Sant In Person!
25th Anniversary of Jane's Addiction
GIFT
1993, Warner Bros., 80 min, USA, Dir: Perry Farrell, Casey Niccoli
Jane's Addiction singer and lyricist Perry Farrell directed this surrealistic blend of live footage of the band and fictional vignettes veering from the comic to the nightmarish. An outstanding soundtrack (including not only Jane's Addiction classics like "Been Caught Stealing" but a Sly and the Family Stone cover on which the band is joined by Ice-T) merges with hallucinatory visuals to create a one-of-a-kind cult movie experience. The film garnered an underground reputation on VHS in the ’90s before falling out of print - don't miss the chance to see it on the big screen!
25th Anniversary
DRUGSTORE COWBOY
1989, Park Circus/MGM, 102 min, USA, Dir: Gus Van Sant
Devilishly charming Matt Dillon is the head honcho of a quartet of ne’er-do-well addicts (the superb Kelly Lynch, James LeGros and Heather Graham round out the foursome) who support their habits by robbing drugstores in the mid-1970s Northwest. Director Gus Van Sant expertly shifts his matter-of-fact tone from humorous to gut-wrenching, proving a potent force to be reckoned with in his first major film. The picture that made critics stand up and really take notice of Matt Dillon’s multi-faceted talent. With James Remar as Dillon’s cop nemesis and William Burroughs as a junkie ex-priest.
TRAILER
Special ticket prices: $10 Member, $12 Student/Senior and $15 General. No passes will be accepted.
