My Interview with Perry

by Mike
As many of you are aware I had the privilege of interviewing Perry earlier this month.
Satellite Party had just finished their show at Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh.
I sat down backstage with Perry and we talked about a wide range of things.
Most of the questions I asked were provided by the members of this site.
If I didn't ask one of your questions I apologize but there's only room for so many in 45 minutes.
Perry was running on vapors when we did the interview.
He'd done ten performances in six days counting Flash Mobs, shows, and a video Shoot.
The night before he was up all night for the video shoot and gotten very little sleep.
I'll be posting this piece meal as it takes time to transcribe 45 minutes of audio.
I should have one or two questions depending on length of answer up per day.
So please check back often.

Mike: Hi this is Mike from www.perryfarrell.net. I’m backstage in Pittsburgh at Mr. Smalls with Perry Farrell, legendary singer from Psi-Com, Jane’s Addiction, Porno For Pyros, and now his latest project Satellite Party. Perry has agreed to answer a few of the members of our websites questions. We’ll start off with one from zdilla. He wants to know how much you love Peter DiStefano?

Perry: (laughing) OK, well my love for Pete DiStefano goes so deep. It’s about as deep as a man can love another man without blushing. I don’t get to see Pete that often but when we are together on the same coast we try to get into the water and do a surf trip together. Whether it’s down by Venice which he still claims he’s from Venice even though he lives far away. He’s an honorary member of the Venice crew and he’s always welcome. When he comes down and records with Harry Gregson-Williams who also recorded with me. He did the string arrangements for the new Satellite Party record. Pete records with him a lot for Harry Gregson-Williams movie / film scores. I’m always looking forward to seeing Pete. If not we stay in touch. We text message each other. He plays a lot with Hybrid and so he gets to do festivals with them. Working with electronic producers in a live scenario and I miss him terribly. We just got to play together at Lollapalooza and it was… it’s always a high when we get together. Usually it’s at lollapalooza so it only ends up being once a year recently. He’s like my Brother; I’ll always remember him as my dearest, dearest friend.

Mike: Awesome! I have some very warm feelings for him as well. Actually I’m supposed to pass along to you some sentiments from him to you. I spoke with him yesterday and he wanted me to tell you hello and let you know he loves you.

Perry: Right.

Hey So Light, here's a excerpt from a article I posted a week or so ago about this.
Perry Farrell is spreading the love to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Earlier this week, the artist hooked up with 50 Cent and Kelly Rowland in New York's Times Square to shoot a video for "Only Love, Let's Celebrate," from his new group Satellite Party's debut album, "Ultra Payloaded."

"It's going to be for college game night -- Saturday night college football," he tells Billboard.com. "We wrote [the remix] together for the NCAA, so it's really cool. I do a verse, Kelly does a verse, 50 does that a verse."
There will be more details about it a little further along in my interview.
Basically what they did was remix "Only Love, Let's Celebrate".
They shot the video at Times Square in NY in the middle of the night.
Hope that helps and like I said Perry and I talk about this more latter in this interview.

FUCK! I meant to ask a question but I forgot my password for ages. It was 'Is Satellite Party just a one-album project or do you see it as a band that will keep releasing more albums?'

I really want to know that one.

I gave him that necklace that he's wearing in the picture!!! When Hydra sent those to me I cried...he must have really liked it if he was just hanging out with it on! It was such an honor for me to give him something that I made especially for him after all of the years of great art he's given me...all of us!
Thank you for taking the time to give us the transcriptions from your interview...you are awesome!

You don't have to thank me zdilla.
I had a great time asking Perry questions and listening to his answers.
If you want to thank anyone thank Perry for giving up his time and agreeing to do this interview even though he was whipped.

Here's another of your questions. :)
Mike: Another question from zdilla. What do you feel about “Strays” as a record… he thinks it is a true great rock album… what can you say about “Strays”?

Perry: Well you know it was an amazing record. We took a year to record the record. Which is kind of long, most groups will take between two and four months to make a record. But I always believe that the music comes first, that the songs come first. When you feel you’ve completed the songs… When I finish a record I think everyone of the songs has got the potential to be on the radio and be remembered. There are so many fantastic songs on there. Satellite Party is learning the entire back catalog. We just learned “Just Because” and it really, really goes over so well with the crowd. It was our only and first number one song that I’d ever had. Even though a lot of our songs are classics they were always underground classics. That particular song “Just Because” actually went number one. If it weren’t for the fact we were on a bad record label… Capitol Records makes every group small. They’ve done it to… you look at any artist on Capitol Records and they’ve messed them up because they don’t put money, time and attention into groups. They give you basically one single and then they move on. They cut their losses. They’ve been doing it for years now. They’ve been on the market to sell them selves, but nobody actually buys them. So they continue to shrink, and shrink, and shrink. Unfortunately we were pigeon holed and forced to put our record out on Capitol because one of our members was very close with the President. Pretty much if this one member would have not convinced the band to stay with Capitol we could have gotten off. We would have been on a different label but as history showed we ended up to be on this one record label. It didn’t have a true reflection of how good the record was. I mean the very last song “To Match The Sun” is a song that I found to be so beautiful.

Mike: Absolutely!

Perry: “Strays” and “Wrong Girl” I had a great time singing those songs. “Price I Pay” I really looked forward to singing those songs night to night. Unfortunately we were only out on the road four months before the band broke up. Which is really another tragedy but here we are today. I’m with guys who really want to play and they love learning the catalog. They’re really gung-ho on getting that into the repertoire. So those songs are going to come to life. They’re not dead yet.

Mike: It was a nice surprise tonight when you guys busted out “Just Because”. I wouldn’t have expected it at all.

Perry: Did you dig it?

Mike: Yeah, I loved it, loved it.

Perry: I know me too.
