JANES ADDICTION POISED FOR COMEBACK IN 2008?
January 11, 2008 -

Though Jane's Addiction only released three studio albums and one live album in their brief career, the band’s effect on Rock Music in the 1990's was something that can't be overlooked. During their second go-around earlier this decade the band parted ways with bassist Eric Avery and replaced him briefly with Flea and then Chris Chaney, it seems even that couldn't keep the band from prematurely ending their career for good after their last tour together in 2003.

At the end of 2006, Jane's Addiction released their first ever greatest hits album titled 'Up From the Catacombs - The Best of Jane's Addiction' and according to the band's drummer, Stephen Perkins, who controls the 'Jane's Addiction Audio Vault,' that was just the beginning of a three part package the band plans on releasing for their fans.

"Well that was the beginning. It's a three tier package. That's the first record (Greatest Hits), later this year in 2008 there's going to be a box set with a bunch of unreleased weird things, that's really a lot of it's coming from my home collection and a lot of cool DVD stuff. We're going to take 'Soul Kiss' and 'Gift' and other things and put a DVD out. So, it's a whole, it's like a three tier project. So, the first one 'Up from the Catacombs' was real simple picking those tunes, they're just like the staples of Jane's. The next two projects I think it's going to be a little more fun finding the odd stuff. Even if it wasn't mixed right or if it's not a great visual but it's something cool, I think it's going to go in."

When Dave Navarro was questioned in September 2007 about a possible Jane's Addiction reunion, he suggested that it would never occur because the band members "did not get along on any level" and that it was "pretty bad." But how does Perkins feel about the possibility of making music again with his long time friend, Perry Farrell, whom he also collaborated with in Porno for Pyros?

"Well I mean, twenty five years in the making here with Porno and Jane's and a lot of other things we've done together. I'm hoping in '08 we'll make some music together. '07 was very dry between us but I think it was a good time for a break. I'm open to making music with friends. So, if everyone is in good head space, that's when it's time to make music. Some of the greatest players in my mind aren't the technical ones, they're the cool guys. The guys that have a good personality and you can hear their music and go 'That guy's either well read and very intelligent and this guy's very hyper and he just lives his life on the edge. If you can hear that in the music and in the personality, that's the kind of people I want to play with. Perry's a great artist of course. He's an amazing artist and I like to work with great artists and that's what Perry is, so hopefully they'll be a future."
It seems like just when the band reached their greatest mainstream success they prematurely broke up due to possible drug related personality clashes within the band. We also spoke with Perkins about his thoughts on Jane's Addiction's premature break up.

"You know in '86 to start the band there was a punk movement. There was a feeling of just making music representing the streets that we came from and singing about what we do. And kind of taking what me and Navarro were into, which was still the metal thing Metallica, Maiden, Zeppelin and what Eric and Perry were into, which was Bau Haus, Joy Division, Echo, Souixe, the darkness of that and the electricity of the metal was what the sound was. But the vibe was really to just be a punk band and play for our friends you know. The camp was Fishbone, Chili Peppers, X and that was the scene and as soon as things started happening, is when we broke up, like you said. Yeah, and it would've been great if we had a manager who said 'You know what take a year off!' and instead the manager said 'I don't know what to tell you!' So we broke up."

Perkins, Navarro and Chaney have teamed with vocalist Steve Issacs to form The Panic Channel, who released their debut album '(ONe)' in 2006. Currently Farrell is performing with his latest band Satellite Party, who released their debut album 'Ultra Payloaded' in 2007 yet perform many Jane's Addiction songs in their live set. Hopefully, the guys can squash whatever differences and animosity that's still lingering and give their fans what they've patiently been waiting for, another Jane's Addiction studio album followed by a world tour.

What would you all like to see included in the box set?
For live stuff I would put it for soundboard recordings of
Ripple
Maceo
Of Course
Obvious
Kettle whistle

Studio Stuff-
Just Because (acoustic version)
Bring the Mood
and all Strays unreleased songs
Perry: Yeah. Well we do we have… there’s songs that we recorded for “Strays” that we never finished… we never… we didn’t put on the record. I think there was at least two or three of them

Good question nexis.
I hope everyone here will take the time to reply.
I'll start on the video side of things.

DVD 1

We know Soul Kiss and Gift are to be included.
Outtakes from the making of these two videos are a must.
From what I understand the band played a semi-show when they filmed Mountain Song for Soul Kiss.
If any other songs were recorded include those.
There has got to be some interesting stuff that hit the cutting room floor when this was made.
Include it in some way.
Perhaps a gag reel?

Perry and Casey had a film crew at their disposal during the making of Gift.
There has got to be a shit load of footage that didn't make it into the movie.
Some of it live footage some of it not.
Include it all or however much you can fit onto DVD 1.

DVD 2

I don't know if they have a complete show on film with the original line up.
I don't think they do.
I'm talking Pro-Shot with a multi track recording.
I'm under the impression that they have bits and pieces from several shows.
Some how cobble this together to span the years 1985 - 1991.
Include a live version of every song the original line up made.
Put it together in a way that it flows together like a concert.
It would be sort of a time line.

Lastly for the DVD side of things.
I want every single music video they made.
Every stinking one.
Including the four different videos for Mountain Song.

There were also some "art films" done.
Stick those on there too.

I guess that's about it for the video side of things.
If they get all that included I'll be a happy camper.
If I'm surprised and they do have a complete concert Pro-Shot with multi track audio to release that would make me very happy too.

I'll come back to this topic latter and post my audio wish list.

Audio wish list for the Box Set:

I hope there are at least two CD's included.
One live and one demos, outtakes, alternate takes, etc.

I guess the fact that the bands shows were usually about 70 minutes or so long works to their advantage here.
They can easily fit a complete live show on one CD.
We've gotten bits an pieces of shows over the years but I want a complete show.
And don't cut any of the between song banter.
When Perry would talk between songs it was a part of the whole live experience and has to be left in there.

As far as the demos, outtakes, and alternate takes go visit this site:
http://www.somediverswhistle.com/recording/
They can use any and or all that is listed there.
Just don't waste space including stuff that's already readily available.
The one thing from that site that has to be included is the pre Dave demo.
I would love to hear Jane Says, My Time, Had A Dad, Idiots Rule, Pigs In Zen, and Mountain Song in there most infant state.
Especially My Time!

I think it goes without saying but if there are any songs that have never been released they obviously need to be included in this set.

Also this set would be better if it's four CD's vs only two.
Then maybe we could get two complete shows and two discs worth of demos, outtakes, alternate takes, and previously unreleased material.

Wonder what the pricing is going to be on this box set if it includes dvds, cds and a book or something. I hope it has some never before seen artwork by Perry in it.
Good to know you're still here Hydro, I thought you had abandoned us. :)

As much as I'd love to see them get back together again I just don't see it happening.
At least not in the immediate future.
Never say never though.

I think the pricing all depends on what's in the Box.
How many DVD's?
How many CD's?
I hope it's 2 DVD's and at least 2 CD's.
But like I said above 4 CD's would be better.
The more that's in the Box the more it's gonna cost.

I'm curious if they got things sorted out with Capitol Records.
When I last spoke to Perry they weren't being cooperative.
If they didn't work things out then there won't be any Strays era material in the Box Set.
I know some folks don't care for Strays but I'd really like to hear a studio version of Bring The Mood.
According to Perry there are 2 or 3 songs including Bring The Mood that weren't on Strays.

Yeah I hope they put a lot of rare stuff in there and not just a few teasers here and there and more of what we already. Generally I don't buy box sets but this might be an exception if Stephen comes through with the goods from his archive.
As for Strays, if the rec company is giving them problems then Perry ought to put them out on Bells are Ringing or itunes. Its not fair having those unheard songs collecting dust in the attic. Could be wrong bout this but I read somewhere that the band basically paid the recording costs of Strays out of their own pockets so they should have the rights for those.
