I was thinking about this today and realized that Bauhaus and Janes Addiction have a lot of interesting similarities.

+Both bands have a cult like following including the use of theatrics

+Both bands apply the use lyrical imagery and artwork together to emphasize much broader and deeper themes than most are capable of

+Both bands have lyrics directly or indirectly pointing to the use of heroin

+Both bands used their own original art for album covers/inlays. At least 2 of the guys in Bauhaus were art students.

+Both bands have split and reformed several times for reunion tours

+Immediately after the original split, band members have gone on to successful music careers; Love and rockets and Porno for pyros

+The solo careers of individual band members each have had good results with none yet equaling the height of their original band's success.

+The viability-demand of each band as a live performing entity will remain strong regardless of new technology, downloading and cd sales.

+The viability-demand of the 1st spinoff band will also be good; Love and Rockets/Porno For Pyros

+Both bands will keep their influential place in music history regardless of future regrouping and recording.

And then there's the small matter of Eric Avery and Stephen Perkins (and Peter DiStefano) working with Peter Murphy.

I am not convinced by the comment about solo careers though - as ever this is all down to personal opinion, and I suppose it also depends on what is meant by "good result", but I think Peter Murphy is the only member of either band whose solo ventures have had any critical or commercial success.

Well they all released some pretty interesting recordings on their own. I guess good meaning they got some good reviews in the press and were able to tour and support their various works. Not all were spectacular. I'd say the first few released by Peter Murphy and David J were better than subsequent material. You're right though Peter Murphy did have a radio hit and probably went a lot farther than the other guys in terms of solo success and cd sales. But after that hit he kinda lost momentum.
The collaboration you mentioned seemed to work out well. Other collaborations did too. David J helped write the song Strays. Kevin, David and Daniel provided the music for a Porno For Pyros song. Dave Navarro played guitar on a song or two for David J's solo release a few years ago.

i never really grew to appreciate 'bauhaus'...jane's rips them to shreds..
