Teen Takes Cop Car on a Joy Ride

By ERIKA OKANO

Updated 8:01 AM PDT, Sat, May 23, 2009

Mountain View police are looking for a missing patrol car this morning, after a teenager took it for a joy ride.

Police say it started last night as people were leaving a Jane's Addiction/Nine Inch Nails concert at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. Additional officers showed up to help with crowd and traffic control and one officer accidentally left his keys in a cruiser.

Moments later, a Shoreline employee saw a teenager joy riding in the patrol car. The teen was apparently driving up and down Shoreline Boulevard, show boating.

Since there is no GPS in the squad cars, Mountain View police set up a perimeter. However, so far they have had no luck catching the boy.

The squad car is clearly marked with Mountain View Police Department logos and is number 3006. Officers say there was no assault weapon in the car, though there is a non-lethal bean bag gun. That gun is locked up.

What do you guys think is it a NIN or JA fan responsible?
If you've seen the missing squad car please contact the Mountain View police dept.

Review: Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails

By Jim Harrington

The cleverly titled “NINJA Tour” is a lot like an episode of VH1’s “I Love the 90s” – only without all of the TV show’s marginally funny commentary.

Specifically, it’s a nostalgic rehash of the year 1991. That was the last time that “NIN” (Nine Inch Nails) and “JA” (Jane’s Addiction) toured together, during the inaugural outing of Lollapalooza.

That was an exciting time in music, as the whole alt-rock genre was just about to break big. Unfortunately, in these days of “American Idol,” 1991 seems – and sounds – like ancient history.

The two groups certainly did little to further their legacies when the NINJA Tour stopped Friday night at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. Jane’s Addiction, which had been in moth balls until recently, came across like a corny caricature of its old self, while NIN fans would’ve been better served if the band had just continued on with its own headlining tour.

The most interesting part of the bill was opening act Street Sweeper Social Club, a new rock-rap super-group featuring guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and rapper Boots Riley of Oakland’s The Coup. That’s not to say that SSSC was great, but the group did show enough ambition and promise to make one anxious to hear its eponymous debut, which hits stores on June 16.

NIN took the stage next - an odd arrangement given that vocalist Trent Reznor’s troupe is a much more powerful live act than Jane’s Addiction - and performed an abbreviated set that lacked some key numbers.

This was the third time in less than a year that NIN had performed in Northern California, having brought its “Lights in the Sky” tour to Oakland in September and Sacramento in December. Still, it’s pretty clear that the area has yet to reach the NIN saturation point - judging by T-shirts, tattoos and other markings, the majority of the concert-goers were in the house to see Reznor.

In terms of scale and scope, the band’s current stripped-down show doesn’t compare to the elaborate production of “Lights in the Sky.” The most troubling difference is the start time, as NIN – a notoriously dark band – now takes the stage well before nightfall. At Shoreline, that translated to NIN battling uphill all set to try and create a proper mood.

Reznor doesn’t sound nearly as menacing as he did back in the old days, but still ranks as one of more passionate rock singers of the era. The other members of the ever-rotating NIN cast – which, really, you can’t keep straight without a scorecard – provided the vocalist with a solid enough base from which to work, but so many of the newer songs simply came across as faceless remakes of past triumphs.

Still, NIN was worlds’ better that what the newly reunited Jane’s Addiction delivered in the headlining set. The buzz about this current tour is that it’s the first to feature Eric Avery since 1991, and that indeed proved to be significant since the bassist combined with drummer Stephen Perkins to provide nearly all of the musical highlights of the set.

On the flip side was vocalist Perry Farrell, who wasn’t nearly as energetic or exciting on this night as we’ve come to expect – perhaps he’s still nursing the leg injury he sustained onstage earlier this month in Atlanta. The 50-year-old frontman was, however, just as silly and self-absorbed as ever, and brain cells were lost every time he spoke to the crowd, coaxing Perkins to take down his pants, defending his tired glam-rock attire (“I’d rather die than give up my corset”) and providing such ponderous observations as “a winner is a winner when he is losing.”

At his side was equally narcissistic guitarist Dave Navarro, who, despite the chilly weather that had some fans bundled up in blankets, ran about shirtless while striking a ludicrous amount of “rock star” poses. It’s no wonder that this guy has fashioned such a successful career in reality TV.

In all, the reunited group came across more cartoonish than the Gorillaz, something that will surely be pointed out whenever VH1 gets around to making “I Love 2009.”

Shoreline concert-goer steals police car

by Casey Weiss
Mountain View Voice Staff

Mountain View police are looking for a stolen police car that they say was taken from Shoreline Amphitheatre on Friday night.

Police say the vehicle was stolen after a Mountain View police officer responded to a call for assistance during the Jane's Addiction/Nine Inch Nails concert on Friday at 11:15 p.m., and left the keys in the ignition. An amphitheatre employee said he saw one suspect in the car driving up and down Shoreline Boulevard. He thought the suspect may be a teenager, but was not sure, according to police spokesperson Liz Wylie.

"We have never had this happen before -- at least that we can remember," Wylie said. "There is someone out there with an emergency vehicle who shouldn't have it."

The black and white police car is marked with the number 3006 in gold lettering, has "Mountain View Police" written in gold letters on the back and also has the MVPD star logo, according to a department press release.

There is a "less lethal" shotgun in the car that shoots bean bags. The weapon is locked in the vehicle Wylie said.

"But there is obviously concern if someone wanted it they could get it out," she added.

Wylie said police are concerned that the suspect could impersonate a police officer, use the weapon, or misuse the sirens and cause an accident.

"We are hoping it is just some teenager who has dumped it somewhere," Wylie said.

Mountain View and San Jose police have been searching for the car on the ground and by helicopter, but have not found it yet, Wylie said. The police department also notified other cities and agencies about the missing vehicle.

"The potential of where it could be is huge, but we have notified pretty much the whole world," Wylie said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Mountain View Police at 650-903-6344. Police are accepting anonymous calls.

Mountain View Police searching for cruiser stolen during Shoreline concert

Car 3006, where are you?

Embarrassed Mountain View police are searching for an errant police car containing a locked shotgun, both stolen Saturday night from a Shoreline Amphitheatre parking lot. Its driver, an unnamed officer, had left the keys in the car when he went to assist another officer while policing a concert, said Liz Wylie, Mountain View Police spokeswoman.

He returned minutes later at 11:15 p.m. and found the black-and-white car missing. Soon after, a Shoreline staffer reported seeing a cruiser "showboating" on Shoreline Boulevard, gunning the engine and speeding.

Police set up checks on streets near the amphitheater. They send up the San Jose Police Department's helicopter. Initially, they were hopeful the Ford Crown Victory cruiser would be spotted quickly, Wylie said. "It's an elephant," she said. "A cop car stands out from a helicopter. It has a white roof."

But even after a huge crowd dispersed from the Nine Inch Nails and Janes Addiction concert, police hadn't spotted car 3006. They searched until about 2 a.m. and on Saturday afternoon sent up the helicopter again.

Now they are thinking the driver, with easy access to Highways 101 and 85, left the area.

Inside the car was a "less-lethal shotgun" that shoots beanbags, Wylie said. Although it was not loaded, the fluorescent orange-and-black gun included about 10 bean bags in ammunition. The gun is secured with a locked bar, she said.

She didn't estimate the value of the car, which is equipped with a radio system, public-address system, a roof light bar, multiple spotlights and a computer for writing reports and accessing a portion of the Web. It enables officers to talk with dispatchers and look up drivers licenses.

The officer hadn't switched on the computer, which requires a pass code, she said. "It's unlikely even a professional hacker could get it," Wylie said. For the thief, "It's not like, 'I think I'm going to instant-message the dispatchers.'½Š"

Police are conducting an internal review, and not releasing the name of the driver of the cruiser, which has a gold star logo on either side and "Mountain View Police" across the back in gold lettering.

They've alerted other departments of the theft, and are seeking the public's help. "It you live in Hayward, you don't often see a Mountain View Police Department vehicle driving around," Wylie said. "If someone sees the vehicle driving outside Mountain View or by someone not in uniform, that's a definite reason to call the police department."

And no, the cruiser isn't equipped with a GPS that would divulge its location.

Anyone with information about the stolen patrol car may call Mountain View Police at (650) 903-6344.

Hey Mudget we were missing Summertime Rolls in the setlist.
I added it to your post on the previous page.
I wanted to let you know in case you wanted to let them know over at the NIN board.

This clip has part of it in it in addition to a few other songs.

Oi!

Thanks, man.

I think I'll quit trying to update the JA set list the night of the show. The NIN one is always correct, but I seem to be fucking up the Jane's set every time. Better to just wait until the next day instead of relying on Tweeters who often miss something.
