Ha ha ha yeah I sound like such a nerd.
This was my first time getting through and I was expecting the call to be screened.
I had the volume up on my PC and when Dave answered the phone I didn't realize it was him.

It's really cool that Dave does this show.
I don't listen live always because of the time difference but I try and keep up with the podcasts.

I think it's awesome that fans can call and ask him pretty much anything and he's willing to answer. :thumb:

I neglected to mention in my previous post but Dave's most important uttering from last night was his mentioning the following:
There should be new Jane's Addiction coming your way within the year.

I'll wish they could do something like Blind Melon "No Rain". That song was like 1993 and it sounds fresh like it was written a week ago. The hard and heavy songs are neat for a time but they don't have as much staying power as the mellow and the chill like "Summertime Rolls" or "Pets" or "Jane Says". To me Perry's voice sounds soooo much better mellow and phased over light acoustic backing. Not as good wailing over sledgehammer guitar riffs.

Some good points nexis.

Seeing Dave playing an acoustic gives me hope that they're working on some "mellow and the chill" as you say stuff.
Although it could be that's just what Dave was using to flush something out.
I guess we'll have to wait and see but Dave talked about the writing process a bit on the latest Dark Matter.

I don't know if you remember or not but back in '03 when the guys did Just Because acoustically it seemed to get raves from pretty much everyone.

So I think there's plenty more people besides you and I who appreciate that side of the band.
To me Perry sings differently now and recently compared to Jane's earliest days.
I agree with you to a degree that his voice sounds better in the mellower stuff.

The guy can still wail when he wants to but the way he sings now as opposed to his scream singing in the past is really pleasing.

Pop in your copy of the Satellite Party disc to hear what I'm talking about.
There are some great examples of what I'm trying to describe on it and that's a big part of the reason I like that release so much.

I am sure you are right about many more people digging the mellow side of Janes. Its that free spirited, wide-eyed soulful vibe that is sorely missed in music today. I'm not so sure the band is aware of it though, not many acoustic songs played live last summer :(
Acoustic Just Because sounded great. I'm thankful they are making music again.

Hi Trevor, welcome to the site.

I too would love to hear them make a record along the lines of the self tittled debut.
Its very organic and raw qualities are what keep me coming back to it time after time.

At the very least something that's less lush when compared to Strays.
I don't want to venture to far off topic but I don't want to sound like I'm hating on Strays either.
I personally like the record but I do take some issue with some of the production choices.

This has been discussed to death but I think it could have been better.
I think that had they released the mix that I have on a promo disc that is commonly referred to as "Hyperleaked" a good record could have been great.

My point is something more along the lines of the first record and the two that followed with their openness and dynamic range is much preferred to these ears.

i was listening to a strays show the other day and price i pay comes on and i'm like wtf was that .. that songs parts are so disjointed and weird and what is dave doing on guitar ... its like the intro of 3 days played on an out of tune guitar over what sounds like stephens attempt to sound like a cash register. i like parts of the song but over all its a bit of a train wreck ... i am glad they try at least .. i dug true nature, every bodies friend and i little bit of just because but yeah i think dave even isnt thrilled about the out put .. which reminds me of "so what" which i remember before it even came out janes was saying they were feeling pretty meh about the new tune ..

so maybe 'embrace the darkness' was that kinda mediocre .. i still wanna hear it. one thing about janes was that they were very overproduced with ted jerden (?) .. stephen hated his drum sound on those 2 records .. thats why pyros sounds totally different drumwise ... but ted could make erics bass sound like the ocean itself .. those first notes of up the beach are pure unrefined heaven .. so i guess its a trade off between getting that sound that feels unearthly and also trying to keep that raw vitality of the moment and the real frequency and vibration of a live band with live instruments making real sounds in a real room with walls and wood and tones .. as opposed to all that studio special effect direct no amp needed just make a noise and we'll plug it into our prepackaged computer room sound er something and whatever ..

if they were smart they would pull in pete and get some more interesting live guitar interplay going .. something tribal yet harmonic and melodious .. they should also get that dude that played sampler keyboard in pyros and what the hell .. just let etty sing back up ... u know its coming anyway .. make her stop dancing and no lead parts but could be cool .. i like that old demo of nothings shocking with the chick singing and pyros had someone singing back up for a few shows ... so yeah just do it .. make it epic .. throw everything in there and keep the best parts

there are awesome moments on each and every solo record from this crew so i see potential but if its just a job for them now they are going for a "market" audience .. so we will get modern rock music .. but maybe if their heart is in it we will get janes addiction :)

dude, sorry but you've got me confused on the whole Strays and ted and stephen

I think you might mean they were over produced on Strays by Bob Ezrin, even Dave himself agreed to that on last weeks Dark Matter.

I completely agree that Pete would be a tremendous help to the camp,I would love more than anything for Perry and Pete to make some music together.Pete could give them that edge.
Petes new solo record

but yeah the bottom line is whatever Perry,Dave,Stephen and Duff do I hope it is epic I hope they create new sounds and textures,I hope it has an edge,I hope its beautiful and dark,I hope it comes from the heart

Dave via Twitter today:
Last night was a lot of fun at the Camp Freddy show, today Jane's Addiction writing and rehearsal. Lots of music is a good thing.
