After listening to Soulmate i'm absolutely perplexed as to how Perry Farrell came to write it?
His songs used to be social commentaries with interesting lines like "sex is Violent"( Media desensitising the world), " turned around, found my daddys gone" (God)... his lyrics were poetic with profound meaning.
Now he is coming out with - 'Im down with you baby, im down with you honey' ( obviosly about his wife... cool)
I HATE it on a personal level when im working with singers who write poor quality lyrics for their gf's/ wives, just for the sake of that particular person enjoying it at the expense of everyone else.
I dont know, i just expect more from someone like Perry Farrell... and the band in general. Way below par
I will be devastated if the new album makes me want Strays again.. sad day that would be. I hope im wrong

I think Perry is at his best when he writes from a childs perspective...Breaking down heavy subjects in simple terms...with a lil twist.. ...I wanna see something like.... of course.....where it feels like a circus...cherry red candy apples and elephant poop
...Does that make sense?

Without a lyric sheet I can't really decipher whats being sung expect for the main "soulmate" part. Can you type out the lyrics and prove they're as below par as you say they are? The song sounds good to me and I look forward to hearing the "Broken People" tune helicine brought up.

The whole vibe of the song sucks. and the lyrics i mentioned are enough to make me cringe. I also look forward to hearing Broken People and everything else the come up with. Janes addiction's first albums were characterised by varied tempo's, catchy bass riffs and insightful singing/lyrics. Soulmate is straight ahead boring rock about some chick. Strays-lite..nexis wrote:Without a lyric sheet I can't really decipher whats being sung expect for the main "soulmate" part. Re: Perry Farrell Lyrics
Jimmy, is really any different than when he wrote about Casey or Xiola?
This is one criticism of Perry I really don't understand.
I mean he's been writing about the women in his life all this time.
Why should he not do it now?

I guess I see my own bad experiences when working on songs in that the band have written a rock song and Perry just added goofy lyrics about his Mrs over it. Probably shouldnt vent that on here :S
Dont get me wrong, i LOVE Classic girl and I would for you.. they are also slower balladish songs too.
The song didnt blow me away..... i listened to it over and over trying to hear something different.
I guess im just picking it apart trying to figure out why...

i think what we used to get was perrys poetry and often his concept and musical ideas mostly finished and presented to a group of really talented embellishers .. now we get 4 people in a room jamming and seeing what happens ... thus u get an unprocessed song much quicker than the other method which begins with honing lyrics and structure long before it would ever have a chance at public consumption ... in other words, because perry writes in the room with others there is no time for the soup to simmer to its full flavored potential before release to public consumption.
i wish they would take some of the sketchbook ideas that were released as records during the solo years and turn them into full on janes masterpieces but because of the fame and success we get the sketch books released as the record which accounts for the less than mindblowingly classic results that do contain moments of genius.
and i wanna hear blood rag in the middle of pigs in zen next time dammit!!!
and i wanna hear perry sing whore from spread at the end of janes whores dammit!!!
