He said that there was a understanding that they were realistic about not being able to reach the same highs they did back in the day but Perry possibly fired him as as her thought he was the problem there? Who knows.. but its probably important to note that they are probably not trying to recapture past glories. That is fine... I just hope they dont lose the Art this time. Strays, right down to the cover (which shocked me) was relatively 'art free'. I think i was just a little freaked out by soulmate as its a straight ahead rocker (from the poor quality audio i have heard). I will endeavour to be more optimistic about new Janes and see it as a a new band, not as the continuation of an old dynasty.
classic Janes addiction IS eric avery bass lines with Dave navarro adding guitar to the top of it. Lets hope the bass is given a bit more of a place in the new songs than it had on strays.
As many times as I've been lucky enough to talk with Perry I've never thought to ask him about Martyn.
I'll try and remember to ask him what happened there but usually when we talk it's more about current goings on.
I think the bottom line is he must not have been happy about something but I dunno anymore about it than you.
Yeah I don't think there's any thought given to trying to recapture past glories as you put it.
I just think these guys want to make a record in the here and now that when they're done with it they can sit back and say "we did good" or whatever.
You know what I mean?
Something they can be proud of and the hell with what the critics say, so to speak.
From what I've heard and read Strays was a for lack of a better word a "democratic" process.
For better or worse that's what it was and all the guys involved had a say in all aspects of it's making.
I like Strays but if the first three records are elevens on a scale of 1-10, then Strays is at least in my book a solid seven or so.
I also know the guys are proud of that record and while it may have been more accessible to the casual fans some of the die hard fans expected and desired something more along the lines of the first three albums.
I don't want this to turn into a Strays discussion but if it does that's OK, but I'll wrap up my thoughts on it by saying the songs from that record that I got to hear them do live were pretty amazing.
I think when you strip away some of its prettiness and just rock those tunes out live they go over quite well and better fit into the back catalog.
Jimmy I just checked out your myspace while typing this up and bravo!
I absolutely love the The Killing Moon cover!
What are you playing / doing in the band?
