Are Jane's Together again for contracual obligations?

Post by jimmydeviljames »

Are Jane's Together again for contracual obligations?

I was listening to a Dark Matter Podcast the other night and Dan said something interesting about them being free from Capitol after this record is done...

It was a blink and you miss it line but it kind of stuck with me. I wonder if they are really just going through the motions to get away from a contract?

I hope not.. and i hope this is not the last janes album.

No - just because they "owe" a record to Capitol, doesn't mean they have to record that record as that would be equatable to slavery, which is illegal. It just means that if Jane's Addiction records another record, it would have to be released by Capitol Records.

Record companies do that shit all the time.. they say, if u release anything we will sue you. Of course it's slavery, thats the record industry.

They do indeed owe Capitol one more record and the one they're working on is it.
I was under the impression this was a well known fact.
After it's released there will be a tour.

After that who knows?
I guess in part it will depend on how well things go with the new record and tour.

I don't think for a second that they're just going through the motions.
From the little interaction I've had with them and the stuff I've seen them post on twitter, facebook, personal websites, blogs, etc they all seem really happy at the moment and into what they're doing.

yes, if they tried to release anything else as "Jane's Addiction" (or likely if Perry, Dave and Steve tried releasing an album) they could be sued. But they can't force them to record an album. Now how it would impact individual side projects, or projects w/ two of the members - that is depends on the actual contact

I think the contract is probably like "If you make another album, we (Capitol) get first crack at it." If Capitol likes it (sees dollar signs), they can choose to put it out. If not, maybe they'll drop the band leaving them free to sign with another label or whatever. Worst case scenario Capitol rejects the album but doesn't drop them, and the album and band just sit in limbo for a while. But I don't really know much what I'm talking about here.

I think worst case scenario is that Capitol refuses to release them from their contract and refuses to release the album and we get no new janes and nothing from Janes members

No, worst case scenario is that Capitol refuses to release them from their contract and refuses to release the album and we get no new janes and nothing from Janes members and then they all get assassinated and Obama declares it illegal to listen to janes and everyone has to destroy all their janes music or else be put to death.
