Perry Farrell: Lady Gaga Was My Lollapalooza Marble

* By Angela Watercutter * June 8, 2010 | * 3:32 pm |

Lollapalooza is something of a throwback. A traveling circus in the ’90s alt-rock salad days, the music festival now confines its mayhem to a single weekend in Chicago’s Grant Park.

Even though Lollapalooza has changed over the years, it’s almost always had at least one band on the bill that’s a hat-tip to the days of flannel, fatigues and tribal tattoos, when festival became the flash point for Alternative Nation.

The recently announced lineup for Lollapalooza 2010 is no different — two of the main headliners at the Aug. 6 to 8 festival are grunge godfathers Soundgarden and Broadway-by-way-of-punk heroes Green Day. But the third headliner is nothing if not of-the-moment: Lady Gaga. Turns out, booking Gaga was festival founder and Jane’s Addiction front man Perry Farrell’s idea.

“We, the show’s booking people, sit down for weekly meetings, and everybody just throws their marbles on the table,” Farrell says. “And Gaga was one of my marbles.”

Wired.com caught up with Farrell recently to get a few details on the Lolla/Gaga marriage and also to find out how the other odd coupling in his life — the addition of Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan to Jane’s Addiction — is working out.

Wired.com: How did you decide to have Lady Gaga come on board? Were you a fan of hers?

Perry Farrell: Yeah! First of all, I love dance music. I like her sense of artistry, her appearance and her presentation. For me, as someone who is not only a festival owner but also someone who performs at these festivals, I so appreciate someone who brings show. I mean, I’m building things just waiting for people like her. It’s just natural. For Lollapalooza you’ve got the Chicago skyline and Lady Gaga. There it is.

Wired.com: How have things been going with bringing Duff McKagan into Jane’s Addiction?

Farrell: So cool. It was really natural. I didn’t know that it was going to happen. My wife and his wife became friends and one night his wife says to my wife, “If you are looking for a great bass player, I know of one.” And she told me, and I said, “Are you serious?! Well then you go back there and you say, ‘Yes.’” And it just clicked from there.

Wired.com: What has be brought to the band that wasn’t there before?

Farrell: He’s got a particular sound and he loves to write. We both grew up in L.A. in the same debauchery. The wild life and the music, the rock ‘n’ roll. But he’s really classy. He’s warm, but he’s a real man. And he’s got four girls in his family, so he’s a daddy to all these girls. So he’s like that, but he’s also Duff McKagen, and he means business.

Wired.com: How important is it for you that Lollapalooza be environmentally friendly?

Farrell: Sometimes people go online and say to me, “You know, you can do so much to change the world. What are you doing?” And, you know, I think about it. There are so many causes. It’s like my dad used to say, “The whole world could use a benefit.” I like to factor it into an equation. Ten percent of your life should be charity in some way. Basically, giving back. So, for me, I figured out that if I take care of the world then I’m helping everybody and everything that’s growing. In a way it’s a way to be charitable and give back and know that you’re doing good work. So the next time someone calls and says, “Hey, you know my friend wants to have his belly-button ring removed, he needs a benefit,” I can say, “I’m cool.” [Laughs]
