I'm not surprised to see an article like that, and they really just use it as the impetus for a list of bad album covers. Satellite Party got treated a lot worse, coming in 2nd in Idolator's 2007 "worst album cover of the year" tournament, only losing to Ted Nugent's "Love Grenade".

I think the cover is an improvement over Strays (although I'd like to have seen the original concept art for Strays fully executed, I think that could have been pretty damn cool). Does GEA's cover compare to Ritual or NS's cover? No, but then I think expecting that is unrealistic. I don't think you can set out to create a legendary album cover, the result would just smack of "trying too hard", I think legendary album covers just "happen". NS and Ritual are legendary, and traveled a hard road because of it. While I don't think either cover would have an easy road if released today (major retailers would still refuse to carry them), I'm not sure they'd generate the same amount of controversy or illicit the same level of public reaction. And I think some of the reaction and controversy they caused is what helps drive their legendary status - after all, how many people have gone to jail over an album cover?

you make great points helicine! and as long as Perrys covers are shocking for whatever reason when you look at them, as long as they make you question what it is or who it is or why it is then he is doing it right.
Erik, can you tell me what the original idea for Strays was again, im drawing a blank...and why it was never fully executed?

Yep, you found it - or at least that was a mock-up of what the original idea was.

I actually don't mind the cartoonish image, but the amateurish font assembly is lacking...

Yeah, I was actually really surprised to not see the newer "official logo" like what was used on the 2 singles.

I'm also bothered by the CRT monitor in the back, why no LCD?
