No matter how or where you listen to this song, it won't all of a sudden make it a better song. The lyrics and singing won't ever change and that's the biggest drawback, as has been all of the post Strays era music, for me. The sound and production will sound better on better speakers and audio systems, but the song never will.

I never thought much of it when I heard the live recording they played with Duff years back. I was pretty surprised when Perry announced it as the "new" Jane's song last month. I thought surely it would have been forgotten about by now, with new, better material written since then to choose from. What happened to all those outtakes from TGEA, not to mention all the new songs Perry said he/they wrote since that album? It doesn't make sense to dust off a weak rightfully-discarded song from years ago to be the song you use to get fans excited about a tour. Don't get me wrong, I love this band, but it seems like it's been misstep after misstep for the past decade now-- well, actually stretching back to when they didn't finish an album with Flea in 1997. 16 years. :(

B/C they are not a band. When Perry talks about having all these Janes songs (like a few albums worth), I think he is referring to ideas he has for his solo stuff etc...But the fact of the matter is is that JA gets together what like every few months to maybe go over an idea or two, they then maybe email eachother some ideas, then Dave does a TV show and Perry goes on vacation. They are not a band, that's why they only play the same 10 songs they can do in their sleep.

I used to do crazy stuff and think of the most amazing mind blowing weirdest shit that only a person with a needle in his arm and a crack pipe in his mouth can think of but that was then and now I'm clean. Can't anyone admit that being totally addicted to smack expands the mind? I'd rather have my favorite band clean and living right but at the same time that also equals shitty ideas for new music. Strays sucked, Sat Party record sucked, TPC record sucked, TGEA sucked, all sober times for all band members. Imagine Kurt Cobain totally clean and still alive, maybe we'd have some Nirvana ballads with electronics and pipe organs. I just sat back and realized nobody has mentioned the drugs.

yeah well you are clean and you still can tell that the new Jane's Addiction tune is a stinker .. so why can't they? .. besides .. if we are to believe the interviews .. most of the great material came before the harder drugs or while they were cleaning up (pfp) but the drugs came back into the fold on tour after the records were made .. i think the real issue is money .. trying to fit the radio formula is no way to write a great Jane's Addiction song .. neither is putting out new material to please a sponsor ... i am sure most of strays and tgea started out with cool riffs and maybe even had that old feel while jamming for 20 minutes on one song working out the groove .. but you get some guy editing it down to a 3 minute pop song and it really suppresses what makes these guys tick .. on strays tgea and soulmate you can't even tell there is a band in the background .. all the songs are about filling space with vocals leaving no room to appreciate the music .. making the music irrelevant .. dave could have played ANY riff behind soulmate and the song would have sounded the same .. there are barely 2 measures before Perry comes in .. the big problem with these records is that Dave and Stephen did not even write a lot of the original Jane's material ... without Eric these "JANE'S ADDICTION" songs really are not much more than a Perry project ... and Perry Farrell is clearly listening to too much Katy Perry these days .. the lyrics remind me of HOT LAVA .. and even tho I don't like HOT LAVA its lyrics are far less South Park, Bevis and Butthead , 2 Live Crew .. than Soulmate .. Perry just seems to be writing for teenagers who just got a hold of there first playboy .. too much time hanging with Dave's strippers I guess .. it just seems like the guy that could write decent lyrics is long gone .. and a song is nothing without decent lyrics ..

In related news, the LA outfit will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their first proper studio album, Nothing’s Shocking, and receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this October. If you’re in the area, keep your eyes open and be prepared to head “Up the Beach”. Oh! Yeah!
