Jane Addiction influences

So what did each member of Janes addiction bring to the table as far as influence? I've been thinking about this the last few days listening to different live bootlegs. I'm guessing that Dave & Perry brought the Zeppelin influence. Eric brought in the Joy Division, Cure, Bauhaus influence(ex: kettle whistle). Stephen brought in the chili peppers funk influence and Bauhaus(ex: chip away). Perry took all this and helped stitch it together into something unique that became the Janes Addiction sound. I dunno, just a wild guess.

Dave was actually a dead head for awhile. Him and Steve brought the metal edge (remember their band Disaster) while Perry and Eric were into Love and Rockers and Joy Division.

Ok I didn't know Dave was into the Grateful Dead. I guess he must have been the one who wanted to record the cover of "Ripple In Still Water". That one turned out real good. One of my favorites actually.

i think i read that david bowie had an influence on perry..

i remember exactlly from the movie..'trainspotting'..

there is a poster in the back of the characters room.and it loooks like perry farrell standing over the microphone...

as a young kid ..i always thought it was perry..

as i grew up..i learned that it is a poster of iggy pop...

Young Dave was influenced by Jimmy Page and Hendrix and some 80's metal bands.

Eric huge influence are Joy Division fan and british dark.
Eric's primitive and repetitive basslines are a Peter Hook trademark(see "Mountaing song" and Joy Division "Isolation" .... pretty much the same idea).

My idea is that Perry brought a great "non-western" influence to Jane's music, using the voice like an instrument or chants from other latitudes.

In that time he was into african roots culture, (Prince Far I,funk,dub, Family Stone.....)

He played percussion so I think he had a great influences
on the young Perkins toward the "world music" rythms (see Porno for Pyros).

A strange mixup of four different head, and luckely the chemistry worked very well

Some good info there. Maybe someday there will be a rekindling and return to the african roots/afrobeat influence. ala Fela Kuti!

Yeah true. Eric Avery was a dead head too, and he wrote few lines on the sleeve notes.

he was the perfect drummer for Perry.
the two played five album in nine years together (3 JA + 2 P4P 87/96), i hope one day.....

An entire album... would have been the best Grateful Dead tribute album ever done for sure!!
