That's not true.
That's the only date we have a recording from of them doing it live.
When I saw them 05/11/1991 - James A. Rhodes Arena, Akron, OH they did it.
Part of it anyway.
The didn't play the whole song though and unfortunately there's no circulating recording.
What I remember is they started playing it and got about a third of the way through and aborted it.

Cool. If anyone should happen to come accross another recording of "Ripple" please do post, as this song is rare and a gem. A soundboard recording would be ideal :)

I listened to clips of Deadicated: A Tribute to the Grateful Dead on amazon and the whole cd sounds pretty good. Most of the reviews were positive of "Ripple" too. I'd love to read the interview with Jerry Garcia praising it and then SPIN Magazine glowing review.

"This is one of my favorite CDs. I love the Dead, and I can tell these bands love them, too. Boy, does it sound good. 'Bertha' equals the original. 'Ripple' is phenomenal. Woah!" K. L. Johnson

"Though the edition of Ripple by Jane's Addiction is beyond description or compare, I can scratch together a few meagre words of praise: this is an apocalyptic, visionary, wailing reinterpertation of an echoing Garcia/Hunter masterpiece drawn from the transdimensional ethers where time stands still
Lastly, who would have thought of Perry Farrel and his boys covering the Dead? Well, it works--and "Ripple" is the perfect song for Jane's to tackle"
Altso Nonaz (Seattle, WA)

All the songs are well done. Midnight Oil does a unique and impressive version of "Wharf Rat," but it is Jane's Addiction's cover of "Ripple" that stands alone as the one song on the album that actually surpasses the original Dead song as well as surpassing all the other songs on the album in quality. "Ripple" rocks. If anything, all Jane's Addiction fans (and maybe Midnight Oil fans) should own this album. Thank you, boys!
Todd Terry (Galveston, Texas)

Nice selection of songs, nice selection of artists, great performances, funny liner notes and a worthy cause.
Highlight: unique Ripple by Jane's addiction
R. Bruynesteyn (Netherlands)

"I heard the original Dead version of "Ripple" on the radio and decided I had to find this CD again. I'm so glad I did! Jane's Addiction does an awesome cover of "Ripple"--I believe better than the original"

Regarding influences, don't forget V.U. and the Doors.
