date: sometime in 1990 on tour
place: rochchester

perry: hey man can you get us some fireworks
manager: no you will burn the hotel down

later that night manager finds perry looking at a catalog of fireworks

manager: my god...this is like a porno for pyros
perry: that's what i'm naming my next band

I heard this story from the manager yesterday. It was much better when he said it.

Hey concertdude, this is in fact the true story about how they got their name.
The only thing I would suggest to your friend is I believe he got the year wrong.
From what I can tell Jane's were not in Rochester, NY in 1990.
Unless of course this is a show that's been forgotten.
Most likely the show this manager friend of yours was thinking about took place in 1991.
