Bells Are Ringing Records

Post by Mike »

Satellite Party have parted ways with Columbia Records.
I don't know all the details as far as the split but Perry has created a new label.
It's called "Bells Are Ringing Records".
I posted info about this last week and it went mostly unnoticed in an unrelated thread.
I'm curious what some of you here would like to see Perry do with his new label?

Here's the story I was talking about in my previous post.
The record label info is in italic.
Farrell Teams With 50 Cent, Rowland For New Video

August 17, 2007, 12:00 AM ET

Karen Bliss, Toronto
Perry Farrell is spreading the love to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Earlier this week, the artist hooked up with 50 Cent and Kelly Rowland in New York's Times Square to shoot a video for "Only Love, Let's Celebrate," from his new group Satellite Party's debut album, "Ultra Payloaded."

"It's going to be for college game night -- Saturday night college football," he tells Billboard.com. "We wrote [the remix] together for the NCAA, so it's really cool. I do a verse, Kelly does a verse, 50 does that a verse."

Farrell, who is on tour with Satellite Party until Oct. 10, has also taken back control of "Ultra Payloaded" from Columbia, which released it on May 29. For the first time in his career, he has formed his own record label, Bells Are Ringing, and plans to spread the word virally with interactive marketing and publicity. He also has a videographer with him on the road.

"What I wanted to do with Columbia, which they didn't agree to, was to be a completely digital artist," says Farrell, a committed environmentalist. "And the reason they didn't want to do it, if I could tell you the truth, is because they have an overhead and they really need to sell those CDs and they need to sell them at a certain cost. I had worked out a way that they could do it, but it wasn't good enough for them, so now I've gone independent. I just use Columbia for distribution. But next time I put out any music, it will be completely digital."

Farrell made this year's Lollapalooza festival in Chicago carbon neutral and has big plans for Satellite Party, which he considers "a movement" of progressive thinkers called the Solutionists.

"I've set this up because I want to be touring with this project for 10 years," he says. "By the end of the 10 years, I'm expecting the world to change completely and we're going to celebrate."

*sigh* I'm already getting tired of the whole digital revolution.... but oh well, it's just going to happen.

After intensive listening to both P4P records today... I'd say his next duty should be putting out the third album. Even if they don't tour or decide to nail the coffin with the next release, I think it has been left undone, but could be a gem.

And I wouldn't mind a record of Perry, Flea, and Frusciante.

I would have to agree with that. I would only hope that if a third record is made it will stay true to Perry's original vision of Porno For Pyros, keeping that unique songwriting/rhythmic style & sound intact.
I'm glad he decided to start his own label. I think having his own record label would give him more freedom to release music without having to worry with record company constraints. It would provide the freedom to branch out into any style of music he wanted to.
Since he plans on not making CDs then I hope that there would still be some kind of artwork & lyrics available for download so buyers could print & make their own CD at home.
Now would this label be strictly for his music or music from other bands as well? Would taking on this new business responsibility take time away from his writing, creating and recording new material? Since the costs of producing & marketing Cds is lessened, would quality be sacrificed in favor of quanity? Would future musical output be entirely self-produced? Let us know.

I guess it's only fair since I asked the question that I should shair some of my thoughts.
Firstly I hope that anything Perry releases digitally is in a loss less format. (flac)
I know lots of people are happy with mp3's but you don't get all the music with them.
Perhaps Perry could release his music in loss less and mp3 formats.
Then because of bandwidth consideration charge a bit more for the flac files.

Secondly I'd like to see Perry empty the vault completely.
And I mean completely.
Everything from the currently unavailable / unreleased Psi-Com tracks to the itunes exclusive Nightbloom from Satellite Party's debut.
And everything in between those.
The DJ vinyl promos, the bonus tracks, etc.

Thirdly I'd love it if every show on the current tour was being recorded and made available.
Some bands do this now and sell copies right at the show.
I don't know if that's possible but I don't see why he couldn't plug into the board and record them.
Then have somebody get them up online the next day.

I know there's more I was thinking of today but it eludes me at the moment.
I do hope this means that if Perry gets the urge to record something that having his own label will mean we won't have to wait as long to hear it.

Shit - this is genuinely exciting stuff! Regarding the PFP release (albeit tentative), what rare stuff can there be? Agua and Dominator I suppose, anything else?

Cool news.
