Three Days

Post by Mudget »

How do you guys feel about this as the opener, now that some of you have seen it live, on YouTube, and/or heard boots?

Here's my little pro/con list ...

Pros - It's actually a great transition from NIN to Jane's. The two bands are very different. NIN is precise, electronic, and tight. Jane's is organic, at times loose, and at times tighter than anything NIN could ever do. Three Days takes you on a ride and immediately gets you ready for what is to follow.

It's a triumphant arena song. If it doesn't get your blood pumping, nothing will.

It's a musician showcase, you have Eric solidly thumping, some of Dave's most memorable and fancy hammering, a throbbing drum line and ridiculous solo, and Perry alternately singing and screaming. EROTIC JESUS. Nothing beats those two words in any song, ever.

There are a LOT of people who are going to this show strictly for NIN. Most of them are familiar with Been Caught Stealing and Jane Says. They will have 7+ minutes to figure out what Jane's is like by contrast.

This is also a con. So, to the cons...

This is the orgasm before the sex. This is the best analogy for the problem of leading with 3Days, and I've seen it repeated over and over by every critic and almost every fan.

But it's leaving non-JA fans a bit perplexed right from the get-go, too. To the untrained ear, this song is all over the place. I've read so many live Twitter comments, most positive, but also a fair share of "I don't even get it, this song is cool but it never ends" "I think they're just making this one up as they go", etc etc. Unless you're familiar with the song, it can be chaotic and disjointed, almost like 2 or 3 songs combined. I'm just not sure this is how you start a show.

For the legions of JA fans who almost propel into the outer universe at the first few strums of Up the Beach, Kettle Whistle, or Stop (typical openers), leading with 3Days is a bit of a shock to the system.

Anyway, after much consideration and listening/watching the beginning of every show to-date via YouTube and other services, I think that if I could move this song deeper into the set, I would.

I would probably move this song to the middle. This song is very powerful and crosses many plateaus and valleys. Up the beach has always been the opener for my ear. It just works. I was really surprised that how well it did work though(I went to the Vegas show.)

I went to the Vegas show with a good friend of mine, and he is friends with a lot of the NIN crew. It was great seeing their perspective on Janes. Most of them like the band and thought it was great that they were playing together. Most of the NIN fans i just don't get. I actually met quite a few of the die hard fan girls. They freak me out how obsessed some of them are. Freaky!! But yes, to wrap this up janes is defientely back. I just hope it continues so i can see them by themselves. I think that Classic girl, No ones leaving , idiots rule and Obvious would work on this tour. I don't think Of Course, slow divers, Kettle Whistle, and My Time would translate well on this tour because they have a certain small club vibe thing. I would love for them to play them though.

I was lucky enough to see them open with Kettle Whistle 20 plus years ago.
I've seen them open with the one two wallop of Up The Beach - Whores.

This is something new for a new beginning as it were.
A benefit to it opening their set is it will most likely continue to be played every night.

Can you imagine the bitching by some if they went to see Jane's and didn't get to hear it?

Right now I have no problem with it but I haven't seen them yet.
That said I don't expect it will trouble me.

I'll revisit this thread after I see them the 29th, 30th, and 31st.

3 days

Ok, i'm a newbie on this board, but i've been a Janes fan since xxx.
I saw the Atlanta show and anyone that complains about three days as an opening song needs to take a few steps back.
First i gotta say NIN are an amazing live band, the set i saw this time was very intense. They really threw out energy that most bands could not match, being stripped down and just having smoke and stobe lights. NIN fans are different then Janes fans, two different animals of sorts, NIN are alot heavier musically then Janes. What set JA apart in the 90's were the fact that metal fans, alternative fans, and hippies etc all could co-exist in the same place and be cool with one another. NIN draw more of the metal/Industrial fans that dont understand the sensual nature of JA.
As a Janes fanatic seeing them open with their most epic song was mind blowing. It was like foreplay, build up, climax, cumming, then getting back up and going for the next round in 10 minutes. The people that didnt get it werent meant to get it. To me it was like sex before your go back for more, sure ive seen them open with Stop or Ocean Size but Three Days as the first song made total sense to me on this tour.NIN were total aggression. Why should anyone complain about what they play first? We are all lucky that they are playing at all and seem happy doing it, it's more then just going through the motions, there is a magical quality going on on stage. As a fan i hope that this carries on beyond this tour. I dont care what they would have opened with, as long as they were there and on stage giving us what we wanted, a real Janes Addiction show. If NIN fans didnt get it, so what, us real Janes fans got our orgasm on the first song. Then we got multible orgasms, which is never bad.
It's a great tour, maybe the tour of the year, atleast my year, Janes are a well oiled machine that are helping bring back good music to the masses, hopefully this will open the door for the next Nirvana(maybe im overzealous) and get rid of bands like Nickleback. Wouldnt that be nice?
We should be grateful no matter what they open with, if Perry shat in a one of his hats and dave wore it, we should be happy this is happening. I myself feel lucky to have seen this show. Im sure all of you will feel the same after you see this tour. I'm glad this is really going on............

I agree and am thankful for anything these guys do. My NINJA show was ridiculous, one of the best all-around rock concerts I've ever seen. Everyone I went with agreed.

That said, I still think Three Days is something you build up to. A lot of people, NIN fans, probably, were talking through the song about 7 minutes into it. It's just not a good starter.

I feel even more strongly about it now that I've experienced it.

Yes, it works anywhere. But I think they have much more powerful openers to choose from, and Three Days seals the deal down the set list.

It's still the orgasm before the sex.
