When Was The Self Titled Release First Available?

Post by Mike »

We currently list the release date of the self titled record as September 20, 1987.
However I found an ad for the July 10, 1987 show at The Variety Arts Center and it says the album is "out now".

I'll have to double check but I think this is the earliest date I have mentioning the album being for sale.
Does anyone else have anything that shows it being sold prior to July 10, 1987?

There is an album review in the July 3, 1987 issue of BAM (LA edition, issue 261), so perhaps the dating can be backed up even a week earlier. I know I bought the LP that week after the review in BAM.

Yeah I think the ad for the 7/10/87 show and tvrec's BAM info backs the release date up to perhaps June 1987?

Awsome info tvrec.
I seem to remember listening to my best friends girlfriend's cassette over the Summer of '87.
It wasn't long after that when I found a CD copy for myself.
Of course none of that helps to nail down the date.

I did look around some and sites like amazon.com list the release date as 1987.
I'm still looking for a review I have but I only found this ad that isn't very helpful seeing as the date is cut off.

Originally, the release was cassette and LP only. The CD didn't come out until a while later, so the ad here probably isn't for an original release date. You could probably email XXX.

i have an ad or promo that came with my vinyl version, that lists the release date may 20th, 1987. i'm pretty sure. the actual date may be wrong, but it's definitely may 1987 and it was vinyl and cassette only.

i'm pretty sure the CD version wasn't released until 1988.

where am i? and why am i doing this?

yeah, that sounds right - fwiw, the oldest "pigs in ten" version of the CD has the copyright date of 1988 on it as well

Sept 20, 1988 is a Tuesday - which is a traditional new music release day.

So what probably happened was I had the CD release date and absent-mindedly "corrected" the year to 1987 :banghead:

Added the BAM review. It may have appeared in both the LA & SF issues, as I am pretty sure my copy is the bay area one - but I could be wrong.

Yeah that sounds right.
I know my friend's girlfriend and then a little later on down the line a girlfriend of mine (different girl) both had it on cassette before I got my first CD copy (Pigs In Ten error disc) and that I looked for it for a while before I found it.
I ended up finding a "sphere" disc not to long afterward and gave my girlfriend the "error" disc because I thought the sphere disc was cooler looking and we'd worn out her cassette.

I got the ad I posted in a clipping lot off of ebay a few years back and have no idea of the date or publication.
