When I asked Perry why he said "G-d is dead" in Had a Dad he said he was just kidding. But I found out much later that it may not be true. It turns out he actually sang "Claude is dead" in reference to a 60's musical called "Hair" in which... the lead character goes to Vietnam as a proxy for the protagonist character Claude, and he gets killed. Heartbreaking, right? Right. But the engineer on the Nothing's Shocking session, Ronnie, is from Canada. He'd never seen the 60's musical called "Hair" and didn't know what Perry could mean. He didn't want to Perry to look bad in Canada, so he just fixed it. He skillfully grabbed an outtake of Perry saying "G-d bless you" when Stephen sneezed during the intro to the first take for Summertime Rolls. Then, late at night when he was wrapping up the dat to go to final mastering, he made the quick edit from "Claude" (is dead) to, what we all know and love today as "G-d" (is dead). Brilliant, right?! Yeah! The dat tape went to mastering the next day, the cd was released, the cover art controversy was the thing everyone focused on, and VOILA! We have rock history.
I love this stuff!!!
