1993.07.05 - Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands - P4P

Post by Eric B. »

Hi hi,

Here some information about a gig Porno for Pyros did which isn't mentioned in the tour dates section. It's a gig they did in The Netherlands on juli 5th 1993 in support of Neil Young. Underneath some information about the show.

I think they were a last minute addition because there was almost zero promotion. I heard only afterwards about the gig. Supposedly the gig wasn't very succesful. Makes sense. Probably only Neil Young fans which is a different cup of tea. The gig took place in Ahoy which is a big place. About 12000 people.

See some information including a part of the dutch popmusic encyclopedia about Martyn. Maybe you can add this to the list?

1992 - 1997
Perry Farrell (Jane's Addiction) asks the bassist to join the band Porno For Pyros. The expectations in the American music press are high, and their untitled debut album enters the Billboard charts at number 1 in 1993. The band's only Dutch gig is as support act to Neil Young at the Rotterdam Ahoy' in 1993. LeNoble buys a house in Malibu and starts living a life of excess that seem to come with the success. When his drug addiction runs out of control he has to leave Porno For Pyros during the recording of their second album Good God's Urge (1996). It takes the bassist a couple of years to get his life back on track. 'I had to go to jail a couple of times, had to spend time in a number of mental institutions, had to become homeless and live in a cardboard box under the freeway before I was finally clean,' is how LeNoble describes it in an interview with the Dutch music magazine FRET (May 2002).

Its certainly a possibility. I added it in as an unconfirmed show. One of the links you posted actually mentions the 7/7/93 show in Paris that we have as an unconfirmed gig. Travel & time wise, that show works. Gives us a lead on digging up more info on both those possible shows.

Interesting info Eric B.

I haven't ever come across anything about this Ahoy show before but we can certainly look into it.

I have seen one ad I think is related to the July 7th Zénith, Paris show helicine mentions before though.
I was a bit confused by it and having never heard of Porno opening for Neil Young I'd kind of dismissed it.

Here's the ad I'm talking about:

Image

The writing on the ad says: Concert exceptionnel : 1ére partie de Neil Young le 7 Juillet au Zénith

Which in English translates to: Special Concert: Part 1 by Neil Young on July 7 at the Zenith

I did a little more digging and was able to find a ticket stub but there's no mention of Porno For Pyros on it.

Image

As you can see the ticket mentions Booker T. + The MG's as the support act.

At any rate this is some good info that should hopefully help to nail this stuff down.
I can probably ask Pete if he remembers opening for Neil Young on Porno's first European tour.

I found the ticket stub here: http://ticketcollector.wordpress.com/tag/1993/

I did a little digging into this and found a ticket stub for the Ahoy show.

What's most important about this Ahoy ticket vs the Zénith ticket is that in addition to saying with Booker T. and The MG's it says "+ support act"

I know I've heard Pete play the Needle and the Damage Done on several occasions and that if they indeed played a show with Neil he's probably going to remember it.

I found the ticket here: http://www.marcelnorder.com/Concerten.html

On this tour Neil Young himself was backed by Booker T & the MG's. The + support means Porno for Pyros. Booker T was the main act. I'll see if there's more info. I have found some reviews but they only mention Neil young. Typical for dutch reviewer to forget the support since they're always late. A good source would be Martyn. It's his homeland. No way he would forget. I remember reading a review back in the day though. Just can't seem to find in anywhere. Young played Ahoy on the fifth definately. the somewhere mentionen july 7th is a mistake.

Pete does indeed remember the show in the Netherlands as well as the France show.

I asked him"do you remember playing a gig with Neil Young in the Netherlands?" he said "Yes, it was amazing:)" he then said "we played in France with Neil too"

Awesome news!
I knew Pete would remember gigging with Neil if it happened and sure enough he does.

That along with the tickets, ad, and info we have is plenty enough to change these two show's status to confirmed.

Pete if you see this thanks for helping us get this nailed down.
Hydro thanks for asking Pete about it and Eric B. thanks for bringing the Ahoy show to our attention. :)

I know this is an old threat, but I actually was at this show. So can confirm P4P played Ahoy, Rotterdam. The date is indeed 5 July 1993.
